Job Description

UNIT PROFILE:
Patient and Family Collaborative Support Services is made up of a range of programs driven and staffed by individuals who have lived the experience of mental illness and/or addiction, and family with lived experience. The service includes Peer Support Providers, family peer support, the Mental Health and Wellness Centre, the Family Resource Centre, Peer Support Council and Family Advisory Council. All programs provide services to both inpatients and outpatients of the Mental Health & Addiction Program.


Reporting to the Manager - Patient & Family Collaborative Support Service, the Peer Support Provider will provide formalized peer support in the Mental Health & Addiction Program services for individuals living with mental illness and/or addiction through one-to-one work, peer driven groups, advocacy and role-modeling. The Peer Support Provider advocates for and represents the voice of individuals with the lived experience of mental illness and/or addiction both internal to and external to SJHH.

QUALIFICATIONS:
•Grade 12 Diploma
•Certificate in Peer Support Training from a Recognized Training Provider and/or relevant work experience with demonstrated ability and understanding of core essentials of peer support provision preferred
•Minimum one year related experience (volunteer or employed) providing peer support in a mental health and/or addiction setting
•Formal training in Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) and/or knowledge and experience of applying the values and principles of PSR an asset
•Personal lived experience of mental illness and/or addiction
•Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply the core values and principles of peer support practice including but not limited to hope and recovery, self-determination, empathetic and mutual relationships, dignity, respect, social inclusion, health and wellness and personal growth
•Demonstrated ability to role-model strong self-care and self-management strategies in recognition of the need for health, personal-growth, and resiliency in peer support work
•Familiarity and understanding of serious mental illness/addiction and mental health systems (preferred)
•ASIST or similar Suicide Intervention Training ( preferred)
•Experience/training in group facilitation (preferred)
