The Director will lead one of the largest, most established pediatric kidney transplant programs in the country, serving a diverse population across Texas and the region.

The ideal candidate combines clinical excellence, a strong academic record, and proven leadership to advance the program’s innovation, outcomes, research, and collaboration.

The Opportunity

Working with the Solid Organ Transplant team, hospital administration, and medical leadership, the Director oversees the program’s clinical, quality, patient experience, and administrative priorities. The role centers on long-term patient outcomes, program growth, and a stronger regional and national reputation.

Key collaborators include the Kidney Transplant Surgeon, the Pediatric Nephrology Division Chief and faculty, and Solid Organ Transplant Program (SOTP) leadership and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Surgical Program Director on clinical leadership and strategy, including review of adverse events and complications.
  • Champion best practices and set quality, safety, and patient experience standards aligned with Children’s Health and UTSW goals.
  • Update pre- and post-transplant guidelines to minimize rejection, infection, and comorbidities.
  • Benchmark outcomes against SRTR data with the surgical, nephrology, nursing, and quality teams.
  • Chair the bi-weekly Renal Transplant Selection Committee.
  • Supervise advanced practice providers (APPs) in the outpatient transplant clinic.

Regulatory compliance and operations

  • Ensure compliance with UNOS, CMS, other regulators, and medical staff bylaws; lead accreditation.
  • Contribute to risk management, budgeting, and equipment and technology decisions.
  • Use data to improve efficiency and patient satisfaction.
  • Advocate for adequate staffing and psychosocial support that helps patients thrive into adulthood.

Team leadership and education

  • Recruit, onboard, and mentor faculty, coordinators, nurses, and APPs, and support trainee education in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology.
  • Ensure appropriate credentialing, training, and scope of practice for all transplant providers.

Strategy, research, and outreach

  • Collaborate with hospital leadership and institutional partners to advance program development and patient-centered care.
  • Grow referrals and shorten referral-to-listing time.
  • Drive research, clinical trials, quality improvement projects, and collaborative networks such as IROC.
  • Represent UTSW and Children’s Health at national and international forums.
  • Serve as primary physician contact for referring partners in Texas and the surrounding region; support marketing and media efforts.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • MD or DO, board certified in Pediatric Nephrology.
  • Eligible for Texas medical licensure and Children’s Health Medical Staff membership.
  • Three or more years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric kidney transplantation.
  • Transplant leadership or directorship experience strongly preferred.
  • Excellence in clinical care, teaching, research, and/or quality improvement.
  • Strong communication and team-building skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare.
