Department Overview

The PHO PAS Specialist coordinates multiple clinic and ancillary appointments for patients seen in the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic and the OHSU Doernbecher Infusion Unit. This position requires high-volume phone work and high-volume face-to-face patient support and services. This position will be responsible for making outgoing calls and receiving incoming calls to schedule new and return patients and triage them to their respective schedulers as needed. PHO PAS is responsible for the verification of patient information and checking in/out of patients for appointments as scheduled. Prompt and professional communication with provider and RN teams is essential to ensure a positive experience for patients. Excellent customer service skills are essential to succeed in this position. Regular attendance is a requirement for effective facilitation of patient care on our team.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Provides high quality customer service to both external customers (patients and families, referring providers and insurance carriers) and internal customers (OHSU and DCH providers, staff and employees) that meets or exceeds the service standards of the health care industry and OHSU/DCH. This duty includes prompt and professional communication efforts, exemplary phone etiquette, flexible coverage of internal service needs and a continuous, seamless, follow through.
  • Gathers and verifies patient information including demographics, insurance coverage, Primary Care Provider (PCP), guarantor demographics and status, and financial status.
  • Check in and checks out patients in accordance with department requiremnts for isolation precautions, etc. Reinforces masking and visitor policies for the department.
  • Opens/closes front desk area with use of daily checklist.
  • Answering Pediatric Specialties phone calls and triaging calls to the appropriate group or person

Required Qualifications

  • Six months of work experience in a medical office setting, including high volume direct patient contact OR one year of work experience in a high volume direct public contact position

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Basic computer keyboarding skills including typing of 30 - 45 wpm.
  • Note Successful completion of a formal OHSU Administrative Internship Program will substitute for one year of experience. Contact Compensation for confirmation of eligibility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience using Epic EMR
  • Skills communicating with large, specialized provider teams

Additional Details

  • Schedule M-F 8:30-5:00; shared office space, rotating work station depending on the work day.
  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs, move quickly, bend and reach, walk across campus (sometimes multiple times per day), use computer keyboard for many hours per day, sit and stand at computer workstation for 4-6 hours per day.
