Job Location: DBMG Headquarters - Phoenix, AZ 85016The Payroll Supervisor supports the Payroll Manager and the broader payroll team. This role brings hands-on payroll expertise to assist with complex items, problem-solving, and compliance, while serving as a senior resource to the payroll team. Union payroll experience is strongly preferred. #LI-KF1
Core Responsibilities
- Assist with operational payroll activities, analysis, and follow-up on complex or time-sensitive items.
- Act as escalation point for staff, providing guidance and review as needed.
- Review payroll data, adjustments, and corrections for accuracy, compliance, and completeness.
- Assist with processing weekly, biweekly, and off-cycle payrolls as needed, particularly during peak periods, absences, or special payroll events.
- Support union payroll activities, including review of collective bargaining agreement application, payroll system setup, deductions, benefits, and related reporting.
- Assist with preparation, review, and tracking of union reports, certified payrolls, and remittance documentation.
- Partner with payroll analysts to support payroll tax analysis and reconciliations, including quarterly and year-end tax filings, liability account reconciliations, and variance analysis.
- Support quarter-end and year-end payroll close processes, including W-2 validation, audit support, and documentation.
- Utilize advanced Excel skills to perform payroll analytics, reconciliations, trend analysis, and data validation.
- Provide analytical support for payroll projects, including system implementations, upgrades, testing, and post-implementation validation.
- Partner with Payroll, HR, Accounting, and external vendors to research and resolve payroll issues.
- Identify process improvement opportunities and assist with implementing more efficient, controlled payroll workflows.
- Maintain clear documentation to support reconciliations, audits, and ongoing payroll operations.
- Ensure confidentiality and proper handling of sensitive payroll and employee data.
- Perform other payroll-related duties and projects as assigned.
Work Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of payroll processing experience.
- Prior experience leading, mentoring, or supervising payroll staff strongly preferred.
- Union payroll processing experience preferred.
Education / Training
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred.
- CPP or FPC certification preferred.
Specialized Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of payroll practices, regulations, and compliance requirements at the federal, state, local, and union levels.
- Union payroll experience preferred, including familiarity with collective bargaining agreements, union deductions, and reporting requirements.
- Advanced Excel skills required, including pivot tables, lookups, moderately complex formulas, reconciliations, and data analysis to support payroll analytics, audits, and project work.
- Proficiency with payroll systems for medium to large scale organizations.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to explain payroll concepts clearly to team members, managers, and external partners.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion and sound judgment.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
