Payroll Specialist (Finance Sepulveda)

This is a full-time and hybrid position based in Culver City, CA. Onsite 1-2 days per week, with flexibility for business needs.

The pay for this position is $23.42-$26.93 per hour.

As a Payroll Specialist, you prepare and process payroll accurately and on time, following Agency, State, and Federal rules and regulations. You also ensure that all payroll records stay properly maintained and reported.

Primary Duties

  • Reviews accuracy of change of status forms and records information into payroll system.
  • Processes all changes to payroll including department changes, salary changes, new hires, terminations, leaves of absence, garnishments, etc. in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Reviews timesheets for accuracy, approvals and compliance with Agency policy; calculates hours worked, records sick and vacation time and inputs data into UKG payroll system according to payroll schedule.
  • Computes pay according to Agency policy and payroll regulations.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with the Human Resources department and payroll service to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing.
  • Ensures all payroll-related remittances are complete, such as taxes, 403(b) contributions, etc.; reconciles Agency employee medical insurance.
  • Calculates, prepares and files necessary payroll taxes and forms.
  • Reviews and approves payroll deductions.
  • Interprets Agency’s policies and government regulations affecting payroll procedures.
  • Prepares government reports and tax filings as necessary.
  • Reviews payroll to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations; identifies and corrects errors; issues payroll checks.
  • Establishes and maintains accurate employee pay, time and tax records and supporting documentation
  • Maintains and administers electronic database for payroll and processing of paychecks.
  • Calculates and prepares manual payroll checks as needed.
  • Calculates and prepares garnishments according to court provisions.
  • Prepares summary report used for journal entries and coding of insurance and other related invoices.
  • Calculates workers’ compensation insurance premiums for processing.
  • Verifies and distributes paychecks.
  • Acts as primary contact for all personnel regarding payroll information.
  • Gathers payroll data and prepares and presents month-end, year-end and various reports as requested.
  • Collaborates with Accounting Manager to develop, establish and monitor payroll controls.
  • Develops and maintains skills through seminars, workshops, or other forms of training/education related to accounting.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and other Agency meetings.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum one year of experience in Payroll, Human Resources, or Accounting
  • Accounting-related courses required for an undergraduate degree in accounting or a related area.
  • A working knowledge of implementation and maintenance of payroll and related accounting and record-keeping systems.
  • Working knowledge of payroll issues such as wage and hour laws, IRS regulations and other legal tax rules.
  • Accurate math skills.
  • Ability to calculate accurately and efficiently, including ten-key skills by touch.
  • The ability present ideas, information, and viewpoints clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Personal computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, and payroll software (UKG preferred).
  • The analytical skills, experience and good judgment to make decisions.

  • Ability to adapt to changing needs by acquiring new skills and knowledge.
