The Tasmanian Walking Company (TWC) have been walking for over 30 years, offering amazing wilderness experiences to our guests in some of Tasmania's most special and remote wilderness locations. This is a part-time permanent position (0.5 FTE, 38 hours per fortnight), working with a team of passionate professionals behind you who engage with your ongoing development and learning.

The team inhabit a heritage listed Chalmers Church located in the heart of the Launceston CBD. A convict-built landmark that was thoughtfully restored into a functional open plan office, staying true to the gothic revival architecture that makes this building truly unique. With sunlight streaming through the original stained windows, Chalmers is a vibrant and stylish office that’s also reflective of the fun and supportive culture of our team.

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Payroll Officer to join the team in our Launceston office. This role supports the finance team and the wider business in the timely and accurate preparation of payroll for all employees across our company.

This is a part-time role of 38 hours per fortnight. The successful applicant will be required to work Monday - Wednesday of our pay week (with pays processed fortnightly), however hours for the remainder of the fortnight will be flexible and able to be agreed during recruitment.

Reporting to the Head of Corporate Services, the role's responsibilities will include:

Payroll & Labour

  • Prepare the fortnightly payroll cycle, including processing of timesheets and payment of all payroll related items including wages, superannuation and associated taxes. Provide a reconciliation of wages fortnightly, and assist in explaining significant variances to budget.
  • Assist the Management Accountant in ensuring correct reporting of labour costs and associated on-costs, including undertaking various tasks as instructed such as Payroll journal preparation and reconciling related balance sheet and control accounts
  • Collaborate with the People & Culture and Rostering teams to ensure efficient systems are implemented in the company Human Resources Information System
  • Support external audits including preparing documentation, answering queries and
    coordinating responses from other TWC staff
  • Adhere to applicable internal controls including internal audit reporting

The ideal candidate for this key role will have the following skills and experience:

  • 3-5 years’ experience in payroll preparation
  • Knowledge, skills and experience in using the Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Microsoft Excel) and varied accounting software
  • Tertiary qualification (degree or diploma in an accounting discipline)
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail including delivering to agreed timelines
  • Proven ability to simultaneously manage a number of competing priorities and activities in a fast-paced environment
