As our Payroll Officer, you’ll play a key role in ensuring every colleague is paid correctly, on time, and in line with legislation and internal policies. You’ll support the end‑to‑end payroll process, administer pension schemes, and act as a trusted point of contact for payroll queries.

This role would suit someone who thrives in a busy payroll environment, enjoys problem‑solving, and is committed to delivering an exceptional service.

  • Manage statutory payments, attachments of earnings, and adjustments for sickness or parental leave.
  • Produce accurate monthly payroll runs for multiple groups of employees.
  • Prepare required payroll information for HMRC and other agencies.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure all payroll activity complies with legislation, including tax, NI, RTI, auto‑enrolment and HMRC deadlines.
  • Administer pension contributions and maintain pension scheme systems.
  • Support year‑end and pension year‑end processes.
  • Work collaboratively with Finance to reconcile payroll accounts and resolve variances.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Maintain payroll systems with updates and enhancements.
  • Review and recommend improvements to payroll processes and data flows.
  • Support data activities linked to TUPE transfers.
  • Contribute to updated payroll policies and procedures.

Stakeholder Support

  • Provide timely and professional advice to managers and employees regarding payroll queries.
  • Supply accurate salary data for internal stakeholders, including Finance and People teams.
  • Build strong relationships across the organisation.

Continuous Development

  • Keep up to date with payroll and pensions legislation.
  • Participate in training and development opportunities.
  • Maintain expertise across payroll, HR processes and pensions.

What you'll bring

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a busy payroll environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of payroll legislation, tax, NI, RTI and auto‑enrolment.
  • Experience with payroll and pension year‑end processes.
  • Excellent IT skills, especially Excel; knowledge of payroll/HR systems (Workday desirable).
  • Analytical, detail‑focused and able to work autonomously.
  • Ability to prioritise, meet deadlines and communicate clearly with a range of stakeholders.
  • Relevant payroll qualification, OR the ability to demonstrate equivalent experience and knowledge.
  • A hands‑on team player who adapts well to change, and confidently manages multiple priorities.
