Job Description

The Role

As we transition our payroll function from an outsourced model to an in‑house operation, we are seeking an experienced Payroll Officer to lead and support this change. You will be responsible for the end‑to‑end payroll process, including payroll preparation, tax submissions, statutory reporting, and producing monthly, quarterly and year‑end payroll statements.


You will ensure full compliance with government regulations, pension auto‑enrolment requirements, and internal controls. The role also includes establishing and maintaining payroll policies, including those relating to payroll advances and employee enquiries.

Key Responsibilities

Ø Provide a timely, accurate and compliant monthly payroll service.

Ø Act as the first point of contact for payroll-related queries from employees.

Ø Support all aspects of monthly payroll processing.

Ø Ensure all payments (e.g., salaries, pensions, HMRC) are processed within required deadlines.

Ø Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of HMRC requirements and ensure processes reflect current legislation.

Ø Gather, calculate and input payroll data accurately into the payroll system.

Ø Identify, investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies.

Ø Maintain strict confidentiality of payroll information.

Ø Produce payroll reports for audit, record‑keeping and managerial review.

Skills and Experience

Essential

Ø Experience running payroll for a 100+ employee organisation

Ø Experience using payroll systems, ideally BrightPay

Ø Excellent mathematical skills

Ø Sound knowledge of UK statutory payroll requirements

Ø IT literate with strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel

Ø Ability to communicate effectively with employees at all levels

Desirable

Ø Strong data presentation skills

Ø Experience supporting transitions from outsourced to in‑house payroll

Ø Experience establishing payroll policies and procedures

Qualifications

Ø Recognised payroll qualification (e.g., CIPP, AAT, Foundation Degree) – essential
