As Payroll Controller, you will play a key role in the delivery of accurate, compliant and efficient payroll services across the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and selected European jurisdictions.

Reporting to the Payroll Manager, you will support the end-to-end payroll function, acting as a senior payroll professional and subject matter expert. You will take ownership of payroll activities, review and validate payroll outputs, support complex payroll matters and help drive continuous improvement across payroll processes, systems and controls.

Responsibilities

Payroll Operations

  • Support the accurate and timely processing of weekly and monthly payrolls across the UK, ROI and Europe.
  • Review payroll inputs, calculations and outputs to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Validate payroll changes including new starters, leavers, salary amendments, bonuses, overtime and statutory payments.
  • Support monthly payroll reconciliations and reporting activities.
  • Assist with payroll sign-off and controls prior to payment release.
  • Provide support during payroll critical periods and ensure service levels are maintained.

Payroll Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure payroll activities comply with relevant UK, Irish and European payroll legislation.
  • Support the management of statutory deductions, pension contributions and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payroll legislation and best practices.
  • Assist with internal and external payroll audits.
  • Ensure GDPR compliance and maintain strict confidentiality of employee information.
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of payroll controls, procedures and governance standards.

Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as an escalation point for complex payroll and benefits queries.
  • Build strong relationships with HR, Finance, IT and external payroll providers.
  • Support management reporting requirements and provide payroll insights where required.
  • Ensure employee and stakeholder queries are resolved professionally and efficiently.

Systems & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain accurate payroll records and employee data across payroll systems.
  • Support payroll projects, system upgrades, implementations and process improvements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll efficiency, controls and employee experience.
  • Contribute to the successful adoption of new payroll technologies and ways of working.

Experience

  • Significant exposure and responsibility for UK, EU and ROI payroll processing.
  • Strong end-to-end payroll experience within a medium to large organisation.
  • Experience supporting or supervising payroll team members.
  • Strong understanding of payroll legislation, statutory requirements and compliance obligations.
  • Experience working with multiple payroll frequencies and high-volume payroll environments.
  • Experience supporting payroll projects, system implementations or process improvements is desirable.
  • Experience with Coins Payroll or similar payroll systems desirable.

Qualifications

  • IPASS, CIPP or equivalent payroll qualification.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills and payroll systems experience.
  • Additional finance, payroll or business-related qualifications would be advantageous.
