About RSPCA Queensland

For nearly 140 years, RSPCA Queensland has been a leading animal welfare charity, dedicated to improving the lives of animals - whether domestic, farmed, or native. We care for over 42,000 animals annually, relying on the generosity of animal lovers like you to fund 91% of our life-changing services.

Our Purpose: We exist for animals to live better lives.

About the Role

As our Payroll and Workforce Lead, you'll play a key role in ensuring payroll is delivered accurately, compliantly and with exceptional attention to detail, while also helping strengthen workforce planning and rostering practices across the organisation.

Supporting a workforce of almost 500 employees across multiple locations, you'll work within a complex payroll environment governed by the RSPCA Queensland Enterprise Agreement and six Modern Awards. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced payroll professional who enjoys navigating complexity, ensuring compliance and partnering with leaders to deliver best-practice workforce outcomes.

Working closely with managers and leaders, you'll champion best-practice use of Employment Hero's rostering and time and attendance tools, helping teams improve workforce visibility, roster accuracy and operational decision-making. You'll be a trusted source of advice and support, helping managers navigate workforce challenges while ensuring payroll and workforce data remains reliable, compliant and fit for purpose.

Alongside supporting payroll operations and reporting, you'll identify opportunities to improve systems, processes and ways of working, helping drive greater efficiency and consistency across the organisation. You'll also act as the primary backup to the Payroll Manager, making this an excellent opportunity for an experienced payroll professional looking to broaden their impact and influence while contributing to a purpose-driven organisation.

What We’re Looking For

We're looking for a knowledgeable, proactive and highly detail-oriented payroll professional who combines strong technical expertise with a practical, solutions-focused mindset.

You are naturally analytical, organised and thorough, with a genuine commitment to accuracy, compliance and continuous improvement. You take pride in getting the details right, enjoy solving complex problems and remain calm and methodical when managing competing priorities.

You are a confident communicator and trusted advisor who can build strong relationships across all levels of an organisation. Approachable, collaborative and customer-focused, you enjoy supporting and coaching managers, helping them navigate payroll, rostering and workforce-related matters with confidence.

Curious and forward-thinking, you're always looking for opportunities to improve systems, streamline processes and help teams work more effectively. You take ownership of your work, maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality, and are motivated by contributing to an organisation that makes a meaningful difference.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will:

  • Respond to payroll queries from employees and managers, providing clear and accurate guidance.
  • Support managers to effectively use Employment Hero’s rostering and time and attendance tools, including Live View and automated timesheets.
  • Coach managers in best practice workforce planning and rostering, including classifications, shift costing and labour budgets.
  • Monitor roster and timesheet accuracy, identifying issues such as missed clock-ins or exceptions and working with managers to resolve them.
  • Promote consistent use of Employment Hero features that improve transparency and real-time workforce visibility.
  • Ensure rostering and timesheet data aligns with award rules, including penalties, overtime and classification requirement.
  • Contribute to payroll reporting and workforce insights to support budgeting and operational decisions.
  • Interpret and apply modern awards and the RSPCA enterprise agreement, ensuring correct pay rates and allowances.
  • Act as the primary backup to the Payroll Manager, supporting payroll processing, reporting and compliance.
  • Assist with payroll audits, escalations and complex payroll matters.

What You’ll Bring to the Role

  • At least 5 years’ experience in Australian payroll, with strong knowledge of the Fair Work Act, modern awards and enterprise agreements.
  • Experience using Employment Hero payroll, rostering and time and attendance systems.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent reconciliation and data accuracy skills.
  • Ability to coach and support managers in rostering and workforce planning.
  • Clear communication skills, with the ability to translate technical payroll concepts into practical guidance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted relationships across teams.
  • Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and maintain confidentiality.

Why Join Us?

  • Comprehensive Support: Enjoy 8 weeks of paid parental leave, flexible working arrangements, study leave, and even leave for your furry companions. We also provide access to counselling and mental health services.
  • Employee Perks: From free on-site parking to exclusive discounts, novated leases, and 50% off Royal Canin pet food, we’ve got you covered! You can also adopt a new furry friend with free adoption options.
  • Professional Growth: Access expansive learning and development programs to help you elevate your career and skill set.
