This position is responsible to safely supervise and coordinate activities of workers engaged in asphalt paving, aggregate, grading, milling, traffic control and concrete production.

Typical schedule is Monday - Friday 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM with 1 - 2 Saturdays a month. The schedule may vary depending on weather and customer demand.

Aggregate - To assist with operations to assure that quality aggregates are produced at maximum production levels.

Gravel Base - To efficiently run the gravel/base operation; produce quality gravel/base in timely manner

Milling - To efficiently run the milling operation and base jobs when needed, produce quality gravel/base in timely manner

Paving - To efficiently run the paving operation, produce quality asphalt product in timely manner

Traffic Control - To plan for and erect traffic control signs for road construction in compliance with government agency requirements

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job)

  1. Perform daily equipment, walk around and site inspections to identify and correct any unsafe conditions and keep equipment properly maintained.
  2. Safely and properly supervise and coordinate activities of workers.
  3. Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) and work with difficult people under high stress situations. Self-motivated, team-player with good interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive customer relations and act courteous/respectful of others.
  4. Troubleshoot and problem solve situations/problems (material quality, equipment operation/repair, etc.). Monitor and discuss production problems with co-workers and managers/supervisors.
  5. Ensure MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, Lockout/Tagout, safety and environmental regulation compliance.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Paving

  1. Communicate paving crew needs with dispatch - Calculate number of trucks required to haul aggregate and/or asphalt according to capacity of vehicles, traffic conditions, distance from work site and productivity of drivers
  2. Communicate needs to plant
  3. Work with crews, inspectors, and subcontractors to complete projects
  4. Produce quality asphalt product within specifications
  5. Coach employees
  6. Communicate needed information to employees
  7. Assist new employees
  8. Approve and submit work hours for crew and pertinent job information daily
  9. Tour work site to ascertain progress in meeting time schedules and to detect insufficient utilization of workers and equipment.
  10. Measure slope and thickness of paving to verify compliance with contract.
  11. Measure distances from reference points to locate boundaries of construction site.
  12. Directs work crews engaged in operation of vehicles and machines.
  13. Verifies curvature of graded surface using hand level.
  14. Supervise bituminous paving crews, aggregate production crews or crews engaged in operating machines to tamp, roll and smooth surface for subgrade of highway.
  15. Approve and submit work hours for crew and pertinent job information daily

Gravel Base

  1. Communicate gravel/base crew needs with dispatch
  2. Communicate needs with plant
  3. Work with crews, inspectors, and subcontractors to complete projects
  4. Complete quality gravel/base jobs within specifications
  5. Coach employees
  6. Communicate needed information to employees
  7. Complete necessary paperwork
  8. Deliver samples to lab
  9. Approve and submit work hours for crew and pertinent job information daily

Milling

  1. Communicate crew needs with dispatch
  2. Communicate needs with plant
  3. Work with crews, inspectors, and subcontractors to complete projects
  4. Complete quality gravel/base jobs within specifications
  5. Coach employees
  6. Communicate needed information to employees
  7. Approve and submit work hours for crew and pertinent job information daily

Traffic Control

  1. Identify and order required signs, barrels and sand bags
  2. Erect signs, place barrels, etc for lane closures
  3. Take down signs and remove barrels
  4. Put up detours
  5. Keep sign area in yard clean
  6. Perform traffic control for mulching applications along roadways
  7. Set up lab trailers to state specifications
  8. Move lab trailers to construction sites
  9. Get electric and phone hook ups for lab trailer
  10. Maintain daily work log
  11. Provide necessary communications to federal, state or county inspectors
  12. Erect wage board and put up required posters
  13. Assist new employees
  14. Manage road signing operations and perform other tasks as required
  15. Approve and submit work hours for crew and pertinent job information daily

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (types and extent of knowledge, skills or abilities an incumbent must possess to complete the job responsibilities satisfactorily)

  1. Product line operations
  2. Product properties & specifications
  3. Supervisory skills

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)

  1. Over 2 years up to and including 4 years from post high school, work, military, institutional or vocational environment.
  2. Minimum 3 years experience in product line.
  3. Ability to provide and maintain proper licensure, medical card and acceptable driving record.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS (preferred requirements i.e. certifications, software use, etc.)

  1. Ability to provide or obtain Class A CDL

$36.00 - $40.00 per hour depending on experience.
