Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of a Patient Escort Dispatcher or Supervisor, the Patient Escort safely and professionally transports patients and patient‑related items throughout the UCLA West Valley Medical Center. This role supports a 24/7 operation and works closely with clinical and non‑clinical teams to ensure timely, efficient, and compassionate patient movement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transport patients throughout the hospital using gurneys, beds, wheelchairs, cribs, and other approved equipment.
  • Safely transport patients requiring oxygen (e.g., nasal cannula, masks, aerosols) and those under isolation precautions, following required safety and PPE protocols.
  • Assist licensed nursing staff with patient transport involving IV pumps, traction equipment, and other medical devices.
  • Apply age‑appropriate care, assessment, and communication to meet the needs of patients and their families.
  • Follow Safe Patient Handling policies, utilizing lift equipment and proper techniques to prevent injury.
  • Deliver and retrieve specimens, blood products, medications, medical equipment, medical records, and other items as assigned.
  • Retrieve and return unused gurneys and wheelchairs to designated equipment areas.
  • Transport decedents to the morgue using approved equipment and procedures; upon clearance, operate the morgue van for inter‑morgue transport.
  • Field‑train new hires and volunteers on transport basics, equipment use, and safety procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with patient escorts, nursing staff, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
  • Escalate issues, delays, or unusual situations to the dispatcher, supervisor, or manager as appropriate.
  • Adhere to all hospital and departmental policies, maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.

Pay rate: $27.76/hour


Job Qualifications

  1. Working knowledge of departmental policies and procedures on the safe transport of patients.

  2. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with other staff members and all other personnel.

  3. Skill in listening and comprehending information received in person, by Pager, or over the telephone to transport patients.

  4. Ability to perform all physical requirements pertaining to the transport of patients in beds, gurneys, and wheelchairs as well as some heavy equipment. Able to lift, push, pull a minimum of 150 pounds.

  5. Skill in reading and writing in Standard English text such as call slips and miscellaneous clerical duties.

  6. Skill in speaking clearly and distinctly using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and convey information needed in the transport process of all patients and other items.

  7. Ability to understand medical terminology.

  8. Ability to operate medical equipment to perform certain job duties.

  9. Ability to complete calls in a timely manner.

  10. Ability to transport patients in a safe, efficient, and professional manner appropriate to good public and patient relations.

  11. Ability to accept new responsibilities and work harmoniously with all hospital staff.
