About the role

Mater Private Hospital Townsville is seeking an experienced Administrator / Patient Services Officer to join our Patient Services team, supporting our busy Emergency Department.

We currently have one part-time position (40 hours per fortnight) and two casual positions available. These roles are suited to individuals who are flexible, reliable, and forward-thinking, with the ability to multitask and work effectively across a rotating roster.

Shift times vary across the departments with shifts in Emergency between 6:45am and 10:15pm. Monday to Friday (typically 6-hour shifts) and 8-hour shifts on weekends.

Salary range: Permanent Position- $39.79 - $44.25 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!

What you’ll be doing

  • Accurately enter all patient registration details into hospital systems.
  • Verify patient eligibility with health funds, including waiting periods, financial status, and policy coverage.
  • Identify and communicate any out‑of‑pocket expenses such as excesses, copayments, and fee estimates.
  • Prepare hospital charge estimates when PEA (Pre‑Existing Ailment) rules apply.
  • Manage patient admissions, discharges, and transfers efficiently and accurately.
  • Respond to all phone calls, emails, and patient enquiries with professionalism and clarity.
  • Work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to deliver timely and precise administrative support.
  • Coordinate and structure outpatient clinic appointments.
  • Maintain effective relationships with consultants to support smooth clinical operations.
  • Prepare, track, file, and maintain medical records, while assisting with wayfinding and general enquiries.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will possess:

  • Demonstrated ability to work methodically with speed, efficiency, and exceptional attention to detail in a time-pressured environment.
  • Proven experience working in an administrative role within a medical or hospital environment or extensive data entry experience.
  • Sound computer literacy and numeracy skills, well-developed keyboard skills, and familiarity with patient administration systems.
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills and ability to work under the direction of others in a multidisciplinary team environment.
