POSITION SUMMARY

Provide care to patients by assisting clinical staff in all patient rooming activities as directed by providers and supervised as duties require. Tasks include chart preparation, rooming patients, performing procedures, and point of care testing as well as performing a variety of administrative duties as assigned. The Patient Care Technician (PCT) will actively participate as a member of the healthcare team, in a single practice or specialty, to engage patients, families, and caregivers in the coordination of patient care.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

1. High School diploma or equivalent required.
2. Completion of a medical assistant program or other clinical training program.
3. Training as an emergency medical technician or paramedic preferred

Experience:

1. Healthcare experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

1. Knowledge of medical practice and patient care, medical equipment and instruments and procedures.
2. Knowledge of physician office procedures, medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT coding guidelines.
3. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions.
4. Ability to take vital signs and record and maintain test results.
5. Ability to record data accurately using a computer.
6. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

License/Certification/Registration:

1. Meets the American Heart Association’s standards for Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) and renews BLS every two years.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Clinical Duties as assigned
2. Greet patients and obtain necessary patient information/documentation
3. Prepare patients for examination and/or treatment and document
4. Record patient histories
5. Obtain vital signs
6. Measure and record accurate height and weight
7. Specimen preparation and collection
8. Perform point of care testing
9. Record patient reported medications in the electronic health record
10. Completion of all required Quality workflows as part of the rooming process
11. Provide instructions for testing procedures to patients
12. Administer injections/vaccinations
13. Administer non-controlled prescribed injections and medications, observe reactions and document in the patient’s file
14. Clean, disinfect and stock examination rooms with required instruments and supplies
15. Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments
16. Prepare, sterilize and maintain supplies and equipment for patient treatments
17. Participate as a member of the clinical question team by recording and addressing patient or other phone calls, as appropriate, for the providers
18. Administrative Duties
19. Obtain referrals and authorizations and schedule tests, procedures and appointments as directed.
20. Perform front desk/administrative duties including but not limited to patient registration, scheduling of appointments, collecting appropriate co-payments, responsible for maintaining the cash drawer and any other duties as required for patient check in/check out.
21. Participates in quality improvement activities and processes.
