Job Summary

The Newborn Nursey Assistant is responsible for basic patient care, under the supervision of an RN or LVN, in the newborn nursey and Family Care unit

Job Specific Responsibilities

Daily assignments may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide mother to be care as well as nursing care for pregnancy and medical surgical patients and newborns
  • Assist with newborn hearing screenings and procedures
  • Maintain inventory of equipment, supplies, and data entry and collection
  • Perform EKGs to report changes in patient conditions
  • All other assigned duties related to assistance in the Newborn Nursery

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • +6 months prior experience working in patient care

Required Licensures/Certifications/Registrations

  • Basic Life Support certification within 90 days of hire into the role
  • Completion of Nurse Aide certification. PCA, or PCT certification will be accepted in lieu

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Effective communicator; Ability to read, write, and speak fluent English
  • Basic computer skills required
  • Able to adapt and respond appropriately to emergency situations
  • Ability to learn and facilitate operation of special equipment
  • Knowledge of techniques for assisting and handling patients

Physical Capabilities

Should have good physical stamina, be able to be on feet most of the day, and be fairly strong and energetic. Work frequently requires much walking, standing, carrying, talking, hearing and listening.

Environmental Working Conditions

Works inside and under normal temperate conditions with adequate light, in a well-ventilated, clean area. Some areas are limited in space, and some test areas may be warm. Usually works around others, may expect some moderate noise. Frequently works with biologic or infectious agents and may be exposed to communicable diseases. May come in contact with irritating chemicals or sprays.
