minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs)

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is proud to be part of the provincial implementation of minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs), an initiative aimed at enhancing nursing practice and strengthening quality of care across the health system. mNPRs set the minimum number of nurses providing care to patients on a given unit. In British Columbia, mNPRs are developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU) and health organizations. Coordinates patient care activities in a defined area of clinical expertise and provides leadership and guidance to designated staff. Facilitates efficient patient flow and patient access within and between units/programs/clinics. Ensures a high standard of patient care by acting as a clinical resource for staff, supporting staff training and development and providing leadership and support to the interdisciplinary team. Provides educational services including individual and group learning assessments and develops, implements and evaluates education programs and resources using specialized theory and knowledge of care and adult learning principles. Assists the Manager with performing administrative duties and coordinates staffing, scheduling and clinical research activities, ensuring optimal use of patient care resources. Promotes education and research. Consults and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members, the leadership team and other health care professionals/providers to achieve excellence in patient and family centered care and enhancement in the quality of life.Practices within the context of a client and family centred care model, and in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP) standards of practice and code of ethics for registered nurses. Practices within the scope of practice as set by the organization, as per VCH policies and guidelines/clinical practice documents and within own competence. This practice is aligned with the vision, mission, goals and values of the organization as well as with the concept of the client and family centered care model. QUALIFICATIONS:Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP). Completion of post basic specialty nursing certificate/program if applicable, and three (3) years' recent, related experience in the designated clinical area including one (1) year's related administrative/supervisory experience and one (1) year’s related teaching experience and/or group facilitation or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Valid BC Driver’s License may be required as local area travel may require the use of a vehicle, and will be noted on the posting.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of evidence informed nursing practice related to designated clinical area.Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, supervision, work direction and consultation. Demonstrated ability to communicate (orally and in writing) and deal effectively with clients and their families, coworkers, physicians, other health care staff, and staff of external agencies, either one on one or in groups.Demonstrated ability to teach, demonstrate, facilitate and coach. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver educational materials for staff/patients/clients and families based on educations theories, principles and best practices. Demonstrated ability to promote a supportive and creative learning environment.Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others. Demonstrated ability to provide effective consultation. Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care. Broad knowledge of hospital policies, procedures and standards of care.Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others. Demonstrated ability to set priorities, problem-solve, adjust to unexpected events and deal with conflict.Demonstrated ability to function effectively and efficiently in emergency situations and guide others in order to deliver quality patient care. Demonstrated ability to lead change and support staff through transition.Knowledge of basic research, e.g. research ethics, research question, hypothesis and qualitative and quantitative data analyses methods.Demonstrated skill in clinical techniques and the use of applicable equipment and supplies.Demonstrated computer literacy to operate a computerized client care information system as well as applicable word processing, spreadsheet and database software applications.Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.
