Job Description

The Patient Care Assistant-Hem/Oncology works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or physician in the clinic environment. Assists with age-specific (neonatal, infant, toddler, preschooler, school age, adolescent, young adult) patient care within designated scope of practice. Follows policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines. Meets qualifications and competencies as identified in the department-specific Plan for Providing Care. Retrieves medical records and ensures test results are available for physician and RN review. Takes detailed messages; maintains exam rooms and assists with ensuring efficient clinic operation. Floats among clinics as requested. Utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize customer service in a manner that supports excellence in customer service, safe patient care, and professionalism. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Successful completion of one of the approved programs in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Medical Assistant (MA) program or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) required or completion of School of Nursing Fundamentals required. Minimum six months of experience as nursing assistant preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Able to read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position; operate patient care equipment necessary to the position; perform basic patient care activities using proper body mechanics and safety precautions. Able to communicate in English (and Spanish preferred); relate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate with healthcare team and accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English (and Spanish preferred) in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; perform basic patient care duties with minimal supervision. Able to distinguish colors as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.

Licensures and Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Medical Assistant (MA) or Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification preferred.
