About the Role

The primary purpose of the Pathologist’s Assistant I position is to support pathologists in the examination of autopsies and surgical specimens, including the clerical and technical preparation of clinical data prior to review. The role also provides assistance to the Chief Technologist in coordinating and overseeing the daily operations and activities of the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

  • Assist pathologists with autopsies on adults, adolescents, and infants, including external examination, evisceration, gross dissection, recording/describing findings, and proper restoration of the body for release.
  • Prepare, log, and process surgical specimens; perform gross description and dissection under indirect supervision; prepare tissue blocks and frozen/permanent sections for various microscopy methods.
  • Manage morgue operations, including census, body release, set-up/viewing arrangements, and adherence to safety protocols regarding biological hazards.
  • Organize and collate clinical data (e.g., radiology, operative reports) for review; photograph and maintain records of surgical and autopsy specimens.
  • Support histology and grossing room operations by maintaining equipment, supplies, cleanliness, and inventory; assist with installation of new procedures or apparatus.
  • Train and assist residents, medical students, and staff on laboratory procedures and the Laboratory Information System; participate in teaching and educational activities.
  • Contribute to quality assurance by monitoring equipment, QC/QA programs, and researching/implementing new equipment or processes to improve patient care.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital, state, and federal regulations; maintain safety standards; and serve as workflow liaison in the absence of the Chief Technologist.

Qualifications

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Health Science or a related biological discipline.
  • Formal training in anatomic pathology, including didactic instruction and practical experience in surgical and autopsy pathology.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing Pathologist Assistant duties in Anatomic Pathology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with laboratory staff, physicians, nurses, and funeral directors.

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is $60.24.
