Job Description

NYU Abu Dhabi invites applications for a Kawader Research Assistant Fellow position in Live Performance, Creative Practice and Research within the Arts and Humanities division under the supervision of Arts Professor Joanna Settle, Associate Dean, Arts and Creative Practices.

The successful candidate will support ongoing research and creative projects in performance, visual arts, curation, and interdisciplinary artistic practice. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to both the development of creative projects and supporting the infrastructure required to advance artistic research and collaboration. The Research Assistant will also contribute to the development of Professor Settle’s courses and gain valuable experience in arts pedagogy.

Professor Settle is currently developing several collaborative projects across the UAE, Asia, Europe, and the United States. The successful candidate will engage with these projects and may attend biennials and other creative convenings as appropriate.

This position includes mentorship and support for the Research Assistant’s own artistic and research practice, including the development of independent creative projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Creative projects as assigned

  • Assess feasibility of potential new directions for research as they come up

  • Writing projects as assigned

  • Participation in annual research planning, interface with NYUAD to action research plan

  • Support submissions of research applications and grants

  • Weekly management of projects in development

    • Scheduling Coordination

    • Correspondence

    • Research: topical (library/online)

    • Research: material (in locations/travel/rehearsal/online)

    • Budget and reimbursements

  • Event attendance

  • Maintaining Professor Settle’s inter-project/institution Google calendar

  • Oversight of undergraduate and graduate research assistants

  • Reflect and exchange on new ideas, independent and ongoing research processes, and discoveries and observations

This is an excellent professional development opportunity for a proactive individual interested in artistic research, project coordination, and research administration. The successful candidate will develop practical experience in managing project logistics, monitoring grant expenditures, budget tracking, and supporting international creative collaborations.

Supervision

Supervised by Arts Professor Joanna Settle, Associate Dean, Arts and Creative Practices.

Qualifications

Required:

• BA or BFA in an arts practice field or equivalent professional experience.
• Demonstrated advanced abilities as a visual and/or performance artist.
• Strong organizational, communication, and collaborative skills.
• Ability to calmly and consistently advance collaborative work.
• Mac computer fluency and proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Foundational understanding of spreadsheets, including working knowledge of formulas for data management and budget tracking.

Preferred:

• Participation in highly selective fellowships.
• Experience in live performance and/or interdisciplinary artistic practice.
• Interest in developing expertise in project administration, budgeting, and research management.

Deliverables

Artist Talk (45-minute presentation followed by 15-minute Q&A).

Artistic body(s) of work developed independently, collaboratively, or in parallel with Professor Settle’s research activities.
