Job Description

Position Term

The position term is a semester in duration and renewed based on the program's needs, satisfactory clinical evaluations and on the approval of the Track, Associate, and/or Program Director. 

The JHU Nurse Anesthesia Program is seeking a part‑time Simulation Faculty member (Temporary Learning Contractor) to support the education and clinical preparation of nurse anesthesia students by facilitating high-fidelity simulation experiences, skills training, and debriefing sessions. Working collaboratively with faculty, the instructor assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of simulation-based learning activities designed to enhance clinical judgment, critical thinking, and patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

Simulation Instruction & Facilitation

  • Deliver in‑person simulation.
  • Facilitate realistic, evidence‑based anesthesia simulation scenarios using high‑fidelity manikins.
  • Operate effectively within a dual‑simulation‑room environment, supporting concurrent sessions when necessary.
  • Conduct pre‑briefing, scenario facilitation, and structured debriefing following best practices in simulation pedagogy.

Curriculum & Scenario Support

  • Collaborate with course faculty to implement simulation activities aligned with course objectives and learner outcomes.
  • Assist in updating or refining simulation scenarios based on programmatic needs and clinical standards.
  • Evaluate student performance during simulation and provide actionable, constructive feedback.

Program & Operational Support

  • Work with the simulation operations team to ensure proper setup, functioning, and breakdown of equipment—including newly purchased high‑fidelity manikins and related technologies.
  • Help optimize scheduling and space utilization to maximize instructional efficiency and minimize disruption to clinical placements.
  • Maintain compliance with program policies, accreditation standards, and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • Required Qualifications

    • Active certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and active Maryland Nursing License.
    • Minimum of 2 years of recent clinical anesthesia experience.
    • Experience facilitating simulation‑based education in a healthcare or academic environment.
    • Strong communication, debriefing, and learner‑support skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Prior experience teaching or precepting in a nurse anesthesia educational program.
    • Familiarity with high‑fidelity simulation platforms and audiovisual systems.
    • Training in simulation methodology (e.g., debriefing frameworks, INACSL Standards of Best Practice).

    Time Commitment

    • Part‑time, contracted for the duration of the semester (No more than 90 hours).
    • On‑campus presence required for simulation sessions, preparation, and debriefings.
    • Hours will vary based on course scheduling and simulation lab needs.

Vaccine Requirements

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those candidates who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
