As a licensed healthcare professional, the school nurse will promote student health and academic success by providing direct medical care, managing chronic illnesses, and conducting health screenings. The school nurse will serve as the primary link between families, school staff, and community healthcare providers.
Core Duties & Responsibilities
- Direct Healthcare: Administer first aid for injuries and care for students with acute illnesses. Safely dispense prescription and over-the-counter medications according to school policy and physician orders.
- Chronic Disease Management: Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with conditions like asthma, diabetes, severe allergies, and epilepsy.
- Preventive Care & Screenings: Conduct routine vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings to identify learning barriers early. Monitor and enforce student immunization records to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
- Emergency Preparedness: Support emergency responses for the campus, including training staff on administering epinephrine (e.g., EpiPens) or responding to sudden injuries.
- Health Education: Educate students on hygiene, nutrition, and wellness. Provide support for students dealing with mental health concerns.
- Parent & Guardian Collaboration: Maintain frequent communication with parents regarding minor injuries or changing health plans.

Qualifications
Education: Minimum of an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN), though a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is highly preferred.
Licensing: Must hold an active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of West Virginia.
Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR/AED certification.
Background: Experience in pediatrics, emergency care, or community/public health.
Terms of Employment
2 days per week for the 2026-2027 school year
