Job Description

🧠 Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) β€” Part-Time, Autonomous Practice

Remote Β· Virginia License Required Β· Independent Practice

Make an Impact. Practice Autonomously. Be Part of Something Bigger.

Backpack Healthcare is looking for a Virginia-licensed PMHNP who values clinical autonomy, meaningful work, and genuine collaboration.

We provide accessible mental health care for children, teens, and young adults through telehealth. As a clinician-led, minority-owned organization, we're building a different kind of behavioral health experience β€” one where clinicians have the autonomy to practice at the top of their license while still having a strong team behind them.

Autonomous doesn't mean alone. You'll work alongside therapists, psychiatrists, and care coordinators who believe integrated care leads to better outcomes for kids and families.

πŸ’œ Why Backpack?

  • Autonomous practice: Practice independently in Virginia without an MD collaboration agreement
  • Flexible part-time schedule: Build a schedule that works for you and your life
  • Competitive compensation: $100 per completed intake and $40 per completed follow-up session
  • Monthly bonus potential: Additional earning opportunities based on eligible clinical and performance metrics
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Medical, dental, and vision for eligible team members
  • PTO based on employment status
  • CEU reimbursement
  • Clinical mentorship and case consultation
  • Collaborative interdisciplinary care team
  • 100% telehealth: Provide care from wherever you do your best work

πŸ’° Compensation

Our PMHNP compensation model is designed to provide competitive per-session earnings while giving you the flexibility of part-time telehealth practice.

Current session rates:

  • $120 per completed psychiatric intake
  • $65 per completed follow-up session
  • Additional monthly bonus potential based on eligible clinical and performance metrics

Your schedule is yours to build, with afternoon, evening, and weekend availability required to meet families when they are most available.

🩺 What You'll Do

You'll provide comprehensive psychiatric care to children, teens, and young adults through telehealth, with a focus on accessible, evidence-based, family-centered treatment.

Your day-to-day will include:

  • Conducting comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and developing diagnostic formulations
  • Creating individualized treatment plans with patients and families
  • Prescribing and managing psychotropic medications
  • Monitoring treatment effectiveness, safety, and clinical progress
  • Providing brief supportive interventions and psychoeducation
  • Collaborating with therapists, psychiatrists, and care coordinators through case consultation and care planning
  • Educating families about diagnoses, medications, treatment options, and expected outcomes
  • Maintaining accurate, timely clinical documentation in the EHR
  • Supporting a culture of high-quality, trauma-informed, culturally responsive care

🌟 What We're Looking For

  • Active, unrestricted Virginia PMHNP license
  • Ability to practice independently without an MD collaboration agreement β€” required
  • PMHNP-BC board certification
  • Active DEA license
  • Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited PMHNP program
  • Experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, and/or families preferred
  • Strong clinical judgment and comfort practicing autonomously
  • Comfortable delivering care through telehealth
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Compassionate, culturally responsive approach to patient and family care
  • Afternoon, evening, and/or weekend availability required

πŸŽ’ About Backpack Healthcare

Since 2020, we've served 12,000+ kids and families through accessible behavioral healthcare. 78% of families report that their child is doing better after three months.

We built Backpack because the traditional mental healthcare model wasn't working β€” for kids, families, or the clinicians trying to help them.

Here, clinicians have the opportunity to practice independently, collaborate meaningfully, and make a measurable difference in the lives of young people.

When clinicians thrive, kids thrive. That's not just a tagline. It's how we build.

🌈 Join Us

If you're a Virginia PMHNP looking for clinical autonomy, flexible telehealth practice, competitive per-session compensation, and additional monthly earning potential, we'd love to meet you.

Come help us build the future of behavioral healthcare β€” one family at a time.
