Job Description

New York University (NYU) Berlin is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach a course in economics called "Introduction to Germany's Economic Geography" for the Fall 2026 semester. The course is co-sponsored by the Stern School of Business.

This course focuses on the factors influencing the location and distribution of economic activity, with an emphasis on practical business and policy applications in Germany. It covers key concepts in urban and regional economics, the role of mobile labor and capital, and how these elements impact trade, taxation, and regional policies. Through a business and policy-oriented lens, the course explores how geographical factors shape economic decision-making and regional development, particularly in the context of European Union integration and globalization. The course aims to provide students with the tools to understand the implications of geographical dynamics on business operations and policy strategies. An overnight trip to Frankfurt am Main will enable students to visit institutions at the heart of European finance.

Candidates should be passionate about teaching, have a track record of academic publications in a related field, and be fluent in English. As the course is open to students from any major, with or without prior studies in this field, the course content and pedagogy should ensure accessibility for a variety of students.

The course is taught in English and runs approximately from late August to mid December. The course meets once or twice every week for a total of three hours per week on NYU Berlin’s campus. The sessions are a mixture of lecture, discussions and field trips to various Berlin institutions.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates should be excellent teachers, who can demonstrate an ability to lead rigorous class discussion, develop assignments that lead students through critical analysis of complex and multi-layered investigations, offer constructive criticism of student projects, and understand the importance of student-led inquiry in the classroom.
Additional Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree in a relevant discipline
  • Record of research and publications in the field
  • A minimum of three years' teaching experience at the university level
  • Fluency in English
  • German work-permit and tax number at the time of application, covering the entire period of employment
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have been doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in the US and/or have international teaching experience.
