Job Description

Shape the Future of Maine’s Classrooms: Become a Field Supervisor/Lecturer

Are you a seasoned educator with a passion for guiding the next generation of teachers? Do you thrive on stepping into schools, inspiring future educators, and building strong community partnerships across Maine?

We are seeking a Field Supervisor/Lecturer to mentor, observe, and elevate student teachers and practicum students in Early Childhood and PK-12 partner schools throughout Central, Southern, and Mid-Coast Maine. In this dual role, you will bring real-world classroom insight directly into university coursework, serving as a critical bridge between academic theory and practical instruction.

What You’ll Do:

  • Mentorship in Action: Travel to regional partner schools to observe, evaluate, and provide constructive, real-time coaching to practicum students and student teachers.
  • Lead Inspiring Seminars: Teach weekly higher education courses that turn classroom experiences into actionable learning.
  • Build Strong Partnerships: Collaborate closely with K-12 mentor teachers, school principals, and university faculty to ensure students thrive in their field placements.

Courses You’ll Teach:

EDU 396: Advanced Practicum Field Experience

  • Guide secondary education and physical education candidates through an immersive classroom placement as they plan, execute, and evaluate instructional strategies alongside experienced K-12 mentors.

EDU 389: Advanced Practicum and Seminar in Elementary Education

  • Lead elementary education candidates through a pivotal transition block—moving them from observation to active classroom management, small-group and whole-class instruction, lesson plan differentiation, and standards-based assessment.

Salary & Benefits:

Part-time faculty members are compensated on a per-credit-hour basis, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and in accordance with the Maine Part-Time Faculty Association (PATFA) contract. Per-credit-hour basis rates start at $1,211.

Teaching opportunities in future semesters are based on course funding, performance, need, and availability. Continuation is subject to the terms of the PATFA bargaining agreement and other applicable University policies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Master’s Degree in Education (e.g., MSEd, Educational Leadership, M.A.T., Special Education, or related field).
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of public school teaching experience, including demonstrated leadership or supervisory roles in PK-12 settings.
  • Mobility: A valid driver’s license (meeting University of Maine System standards) to travel to partner schools throughout the region.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a mentor teacher or background in innovative models of pre-service teacher supervision and school-university partnerships.
  • Prior teaching experience at the post-secondary/higher education level.

About University of Maine System (UMS)

The University of Maine System (UMS) is the state’s largest driver of educational attainment and economic development. In the past two decades, the System has awarded 106,362 degrees and spurred and strengthened thousands of small Maine businesses through world-class research and development.

Established in 1968, UMS unites the state’s distinctive public universities including the R1 University of Maine and its regional campus the University of Maine at Machias, the University of Maine at Augusta, the University of Maine at Farmington, the University of Maine at Fort Kent, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the University of Southern Maine and the University of Maine School of Law, as well as the University of Maine Graduate and Professional Center.

The System serves more than 30,000 students annually and its tripartite education, research and service mission is made possible by the efforts of some 5,000 faculty and staff.
