The Deputy Coroner is responsible for assisting the Coroner in the investigation and determination of causes of death, while ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will possess experience in a funeral home setting or have familiarity with death certificate processing, demonstrating strong communication and organizational skills. Anthropology experience will be given special consideration.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Assist the Coroner in conducting death investigations, including the examination of deceased individuals and collection of evidence.
- Collaborate with law enforcement, medical professionals, and other agencies involved in death investigations.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records related to death investigations, including autopsy reports and death certificates.
- Provide compassionate support to families of deceased individuals, offering guidance through the process of arranging funerals and understanding legal requirements.
- Ensure proper handling and storage of remains in accordance with state and local regulations.
- Assist in the preparation of reports and documentation for court proceedings as necessary.
- Participate in community outreach and education regarding death investigation processes and resources available to families.
- Stay updated on changes in laws and regulations related to death investigations and coroner responsibilities.
**Qualifications:**
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in mortuary science, forensic science, or related field preferred.
- Previous experience in a funeral home or related environment is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of death certificate processing and legal requirements surrounding death investigations.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for job duties.
