Position Type: Part Time
Salary Range: $11.32 - $12.92 Hourly

Join our team at The Underground in Wescoe Hall, one of KU Dining’s busiest food court locations!
As a part-time cook, you’ll play a key role in preparing and serving fresh, high-quality food in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. This position is ideal for individuals who thrive in team settings, enjoy culinary work, and take pride in delivering excellent meals to students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.
This position is FLSA part-time hourly non-exempt, meaning it is eligible for overtime pay. Work schedules may vary, and early morning, evening and weekend work may be required.
Duties & Responsibilities of All KU Memorial Unions Positions:
- Adhere to University and KU Memorial Unions policies and procedures.
- Support the KU Memorial Unions lines of effort, initiatives, and End State as described by the Executive Director, and work to achieve and uphold the department’s mission and core values: community, dignity, empowerment, excellence, innovation, and safety.
- Follow the 7 Team Principles: competence, creating a cohesive team through mutual trust, creating shared understanding, setting clear leader intent, written/verbal communication, disciplined initiative, and risk management.
- Demonstrate a positive, solution-oriented attitude in performing job responsibilities and collaborating with colleagues to foster a respectful and productive work environment.
- Always exhibit professional decorum while representing the KU Memorial Unions and the University, including routine events and meetings that occur outside of the office, around campus, and out in the community.
Supervision:
- Received: Direct supervision from the supervisor and senior cooks.
- Given: Does not supervise other employees but may provide guidance and simple instructions to other staff as needed.
Essential Functions:
- Production and Preparation:

- - Review and interpret daily production sheets to understand the schedule and specific requirements.

- - Follow recipes meticulously to ensure consistency in flavor, presentation, and quality.

- - Sample foods regularly to verify flavor, texture, and consistency, ensuring adherence to quality standards.

- Food Safety and Handling:

- - Handle raw ingredients, cook foods, and store products in compliance with HACCP and ServeSafe standards.

- - Ensure all products are accurately labeled and stored for optimal food safety and quality.

- Sanitation and Maintenance:

- - Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment, including walls, floors, equipment, and refrigeration units.

- - Clean and maintain kitchen equipment and stainless-steel appliances, ensuring they are in good working order.

Additional Responsibilities:
- Multi-tasking:

- - Efficiently manage tasks in both hot and cold kitchen areas.

- - Work effectively within a team setting to ensure smooth kitchen operations.

QualificationsRequired Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Physical Requirements:

- - Ability to meet the physical demands of food service work, including standing for long periods, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

- Hygiene and Work Habits:

- - Adhere to high standards of personal hygiene and work habits.

- Flexibility:

- - Adapt to last-minute changes and meet the evolving needs of the food service operation.

Required Education and Training:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred

Qualifications:
- Cooking

Experience:

- - Prior cooking experience in a college or institutional setting.

- Equipment and Skills:

- - Knowledge of kitchen equipment operation and strong knife skills.

- Culinary Background:
-
- - Some background in food service, including classical preparation methods, knowledge of common ingredients, proper storage and rotation of products, and industry standards.

- Sanitation Skills:
-
- - Basic food service sanitation skills, with ServeSafe certification being highly desirable.
