Job Description

Soka University of America (SUA), Aliso Viejo, California invites applicants to fill a part-time adjunct instructor position to teach small group courses in jazz and direct an ensemble of undergraduate non-majors in the fall semester of 2026 (starting September 8, 2026).

The successful candidate will teach entry- and intermediate-level jazz theory and keyboard to small classes of students with diverse musical and life backgrounds. Each class meets for one hour per week. Courses to be taught may include Jazz Theory at the Keyboard (MUSICENS 139,) Jazz Ensemble - Combo (MUSICENS 141/341,) Advanced Jazz Theory at the Keyboard (MUSICENS 339). Additional sections may be opened upon demand. The candidate should be available on weekday afternoons or early evenings and will also support rehearsals and end of semester recitals.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a terminal degree in jazz performance and/or pedagogy, or equivalent professional experience, and have demonstrated success teaching related courses at the college or university level.

Candidates should demonstrate responsiveness toward and understanding of diverse student backgrounds, for example regarding socioeconomic status, culture, ability/disability. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the university’s mission to develop global citizens. Having the ability and willingness to work collegially is essential, as is an understanding of our interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum.

Salary: The anticipated salary range for this position is $1,977 - $2,036 per credit/contact hour and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
