The Accountant II will assist with the accounting and financial administration of Rice’s Gulf Coast Consortia (GCC) programs, grants and projects to meet business objectives. Under general supervision, Accountant II performs accounting functions (expenditure reconciliations, reporting, monitoring accounts, etc.) using basic accounting principles and theories. GCC is a multi-institutional, biomedical research and training organization under Rice University’s Office of Research.

He or she will have experience in general accounting activities, including the preparation, maintenance and reconciliation of ledger accounts and financial statements.

Workplace Requirements:

This position is located in the GCC offices: BioScience Research Collaborative, 6500 Main Street, Houston.

This position is offered as a hybrid role, combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. Typically, this is 3-4 days/week in the office. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: Annual salary range is $45,609 - $52,425 (this position is .75 FTE (30hrs).

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree
    • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
  • Two or more (2+) years of related experience
    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

Skills

  • Advanced Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database software
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and accounting principles
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting systems

Essential Functions:

  • Performs general accounting activities, including the preparation, maintenance and reconciliation of ledger accounts and financial statements
  • Analyzes general accounting transactions and information to summarize current financial position at the unit or organization-wide level
  • Collects data and performs research on details of transactions
  • Generates, reviews, analyzes and communicates financial data that reflects actual financial performance against approved budgets
  • Prepares and presents quantitative and qualitative analyses focusing on variances from budget and prior data
  • Maintains and reviews accounting process controls; recommends and implements any approved modifications; performs preliminary analysis and recommends solutions
  • Produces and analyzes moderately complex financial reports, often from multiple systems; prepares basic management information reports
  • May act as a lead and provide direction and training to less experienced accounting staff
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Additional Functions:

  • Interfaces and exchanges information with Research Accounting
  • Enters proposal information in Cayuse and tracks awards and subawards with non-Rice institutions
  • Tracks invoices for specified awards under Rice.
  • Interfaces with iO for labor redistributions
  • Handles Pcard and travel receipts, reimbursements for staff and guests
  • Performs other duties on a timely basis and as needed

Preferences:

  • Experience working in an academic setting with faculty, students, administrators
  • Experience with the Rice financial system iO
  • Willingness to learn new computer programs, apps, tools and website platforms
