Part-time Open Space and Trails Lead Staff perform and lead a variety of entry-level open space and trails related maintenance activities including mowing operations, safety and cleanliness inspections, minor construction work, trash and vandalism removal, noxious weed control, and other natural area related maintenance activities.
- It is expected that Part-time Lead staff are able to self-motivate and perform independent work with limited supervision.
This position may also occasionally support other work groups within the Parks and Open Space Division including work in Parks Maintenance, Athletics, and/or Forestry and Horticulture.
Anticipated Work Schedule: Part-time staff may work up to 40+ hours per week and must be available a minimum of 16 hours per week.
- There is one primary shift group:
- - M-Th 6:30am-5pm
- - Flexible scheduling options may be accommodated based on work group needs.
Employees in this classification are limited to 1,560 hours per year with no termination date.

Duties And Responsibilities
Under supervision, assists higher level technicians and performs a variety of routine to complex maintenance and construction activities such as:

- Open space, trails, and natural areas maintenance including but not limited to mowing and trimming, fence installation and other related construction activities.
- Collecting trash and removing vandalism and graffiti.
- Noxious weed control utilizing mechanical and chemical methods.
- Performing a variety of heavy laboring activities utilizing pickup trucks, trailers, tractors, riding mowers, woodchippers, edgers, string trimmers, backpack blowers and various hand tools and other power maintenance equipment.
- Installing and maintaining concrete work, signage, fences, and open space and trails amenities.
- Directing, training, and motivating part-time staff in the absence of full-time staff.
- Attending meetings to include monthly Divisional all-staff meetings.
- Performing snow removal activities either by hand, small equipment, or heavy equipment as assigned.
Assist with other duties to include
- Cleaning and organization of shop area.
- Arboriculture and horticulture assignments including planting and transplanting of plants, site preparation, installation, backfilling, staking, pruning, watering, and mulching.
- Turf maintenance, playground maintenance, hardscape maintenance, irrigation repair, and other related assignments.
- Athletic field maintenance including infield skin work, clay, field prep, and painting athletic surfaces.
- Applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with prescribed guidelines; maintaining usage records.
- Performing other appropriate duties as assigned.
Assist to maintain a safe working environment to include
- Safety checks of equipment and minor maintenance activities on vehicles and equipment.
- Following all safety protocols for working in traffic and congested areas.
- Working in ditches and confined spaces and all other work environments.

Qualifications and BenefitsMinimum

Qualifications
- Must be available to work a minimum of 16 hours per week.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent. Associate degree preferred.
- Minimum one (1) year experience in Parks Maintenance, Open Space/Natural Areas Maintenance, equipment operation, or related field.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must be able to work weekends or evenings, as assigned.
