Performs and provides maintenance, repair, and renovation work in the care and keeping of the City’s Parks and public spaces.
Environmental Factors
Work is primarily performed outdoors in all weather conditions; exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, explosives, chemicals, fumes, odors, gases, dust and poor ventilation. Safety equipment and clothing includes gloves, vests, back brace, steel toe boots, glasses and ear plugs.
Physical Factors
Moderately heavy work involving frequent balancing, bending, stooping, climbing, crouching, kneeling and squatting; pushing, pulling and lifting items weighing up to sixty (60) pounds; lifting and/or carrying with assistance bleachers and stages weighing up to four-hundred (400) pounds.
Work Situation Factors
Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, shift work, flex time, occasional overtime occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the entry level into the Parks Maintenance job series. As such, employees in this class work on welldefined tasks which are assigned on a daily basis. Depending on the area of assignment, employees work in support of, or under the lead instruction and review of a skilled worker.
Position will be advertised as continuous until filled, with periodic review of applications.

This posting will be used to fill a part-time, contract position, but may be used to fill other full-time, part-time, temporary, contract, or other similar positions that become available in various City Departments.
This position is graded at a CN04.
• Conducts inspections of park structures and equipment; makes repairs of damaged structures and equipment.
• Performs landscaping, including plant, tree and shrub plantings and pruning; weeds area, uses spry, tool and equipment.
• Mows grass; cuts weeds; fertilizes and applies pesticides to grass, trees and shrubs; lays sod.
• Removes or paints over graffiti; cleans and maintains restrooms; empties trash and picks up litter.
• Performs minor maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
• Delivers bleachers, garbage cans, stages, chairs, tents, picnic tables and related items to event sites; performs clean up prior to and following the events.
• Assists in the maintenance and repair of athletic fields (baseball, softball, soccer, etc.); repairs bleachers, backstops, and fencing;
• Provides assistance to irrigation and construction workers as necessary.
• May assists with playground equipment maintenance and repair; may assist with installing and repairing irrigation systems.
No education requirement AND six (6) months of experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture maintenance or related. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
Licenses/Certification(s)
Valid driver’s license required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
Knowledge of: Principles, practices, methods and techniques of parks building and grounds maintenance. ; current principles of record keeping and records management; principles and practices of effective research methods and data analysis, customer service, and problem resolution techniques; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment; current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence; correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
