Job Description

MAJOR FUNCTION

Semi-skilled technical work within a comprehensive environmental mosquito control program performing pesticide applications and related operations.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Truck and equipment operation in the application of insecticides with spray equipment, and the collection and recording of data as required. Conducts spray operations in assigned areas of the County. Assures thorough treatment of the assigned area while avoiding areas where pesticide application is prohibited or not indicated. Follows the Federal, State, and County regulations and policies for the application of pesticides. Inspects trucks and spray equipment for proper operation, mechanical, and/or other problems prior to spraying. Completes reports on any problems prior to, during, or after operations.

Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of Florida driving and safety requirements in all weather conditions and times of the day. Ability to read. Ability to drive at night. Ability to become familiar with the roadway/highway system in Polk County and use maps. Ability to perform unskilled manual labor. Ability to learn to use tools and equipment as well as the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to laboring tasks. Ability to follow instructions and concentrate on assigned tasks. Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in an understandable manner. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure. Ability to see, hear sounds at a normal level, ambulate independently, bend, stoop, sit or stand. Ability to use multihand and/or foot controls. Ability to work in all weather and environmental conditions (i.e.: sun, rain, cold, swamp, ditches, and dirt). Must be able to exert up to 45 pounds occasionally, and/or 25-30 pounds of force frequently and/or 10-20 pounds of force constantly in order to lift and/or move equipment and supplies.

Ability to follow written and oral detailed instructions and apply pesticides in accordance with instructions. Ability to work independently. Ability to complete reports and record data. Ability to use independent judgment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to secure a Florida driver’s license at the time of employment.

A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

May work evenings and/or irregular hours. May not be pesticide or chemically sensitive or have respiratory problems.

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.

As outlined in the Polk County Charter, the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) is the governing body of Polk County. Each commissioner is elected by a countywide vote.

Duties and Powers

The County Commission adopts an annual budget which includes appropriations for services provided by county government including the Sheriff, Property Appraiser, Tax Collector and Supervisor of Elections. This budget also includes appropriations in support of the Circuit and County Courts, State Attorney, Public Defender and Clerk of the Court. Some other responsibilities:

* provide and regulate waste and sewage collection and disposal, water supply and conservation programs,

* provide and operate public transportation systems, roads, bridges and related facilities.
