The Department of Parks and Recreation,is hiring a Park Caretaker II in the Honolulu area This position plays an important role in maintaining the grounds, facilities, landscaping and special features in our community parks.

What You Will Do:

  • Maintain landscaped areas and park grounds, including planting, pruning, trimming, edging, raking, aerating, watering, and caring for native Hawaiian plants and other vegetation.
  • Operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment and vehicles, including mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, trailers, and other motorized equipment; perform routine preventive maintenance and minor emergency repairs.
  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on park facilities and features, including irrigation systems, playground equipment, fences, benches, tables, roadways, parking areas, restrooms, bathhouses, and other park structures.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and presentable park facilities by cleaning restrooms and other facilities, replenishing supplies, removing debris, and maintaining public-use areas.
  • Interact with the public and enforce park rules and regulations by checking permits, identifying violations, explaining applicable rules, and providing information and assistance to park users.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Special Working Conditions:

  • Work hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., but is subject to change and may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Position will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Qualifications

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in manual labor and semi-skilled tasks in the care, maintenance and beautification of landscaped areas; performance of semi-skilled or skilled building or mechanical trades experience; and/or operation or repair of passenger and/or tractor type mowers.

Applicable experience must have demonstrated:

  • Knowledge of and ability to identify, care for and cultivate plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, ground cover and lawns;
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate hand and power equipment and tools and grounds and general construction equipment and tools;
  • Knowledge of common methods and materials used in simple construction and maintenance work;
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work in the repair and maintenance of buildings and park grounds;
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the general public;
  • Ability to learn pertinent laws, rules and regulations and enforce them;
  • Ability to make simple oral and written reports.


LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
The following are required prior to appointment:

  1. Valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3/automobile)
  2. Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner's Certificate
  3. Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test
