Definition
The employee performs a variety of tasks for the professional staff in the schools to build a good home-school partnership. Among the specialty areas are home visits, interviewing parents, and coordinating parent involvement activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Serves as liaison between parents, school, and community to build good home-school relations.
• Conducts home visits; interviews parents; plans, coordinates, and implements parent involvement activities.
• Seeks input from staff in making decisions about parent involvement activities.
• Develops parent activities.
• Prepares and distributes a weekly calendar of events for parent involvement activities.
• Collaborates with community agencies on specific projects.
• Maintains parent resources.
• Conducts parent training sessions.
• Operates copiers and mimeograph machines for the reproduction of materials for parent involvement activities.
• Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of the developmental stages of students at assigned school.
• Knowledge of parent education programs.
• Ability to effectively communicate events on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.
• Ability to communicate and work with parents of disadvantaged children.
• Ability to use sound judgment in approaching and working with sensitive and difficult situations.
• Ability to analyze situations, determine possible options, and make appropriate decisions based on the facts and specific situations.
• Interest in students and the learning environment.
• Ability to coordinate and/or conduct parent workshops.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to be patient and tactful with parents.
• Ability to direct and lead parents and/or students in individual situations and group activities.
• Ability to prepare a variety of materials for parent workshops and operate the necessary machines to prepare these materials.
• Ability to help maintain a positive atmosphere in the school.
• Ability to plan and organize multiple activities, projects, and other tasks.
• Ability to develop and compile records and reports.
• Ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with students, teachers, administrators, and parents.
• Working knowledge of the core subjects at the grade level to which employment assignment is made in order to train parents to be able to assist their children.
• Some knowledge of the school organization and its community.
• Skill necessary to operate audiovisual equipment and common office machines.
• Ability to solve independently most minor problems.
• Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision.
• Ability to record and store data accurately.
• Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student information.
• Some understanding of the problems related to parents of disadvantaged children.
• Interest in students and the learning environment.
Physical Requirements
• Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, talking, and hearing.
• Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently; and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
• Must possess the visual acuity to count money and objects, check the work and efforts of the children, and observe behavior and actions in the classroom.
Minimum Education and Experience
• Graduation from high school, preferably with one or two years of experience working with adults; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Higher education level preferred.
• Computer/technology skills required for maintaining records (demonstration may be required, if interviewed).
Classification: Non-exempt
Salary: Grade 53 (changed on the new scale)
