Key Responsibilities

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) invites you to consider an enjoyable and gratifying employment opportunity with our school. We are looking for a caring and motivated Paraprofessional to work with our blind/low vision students under the supervision of an Instructor for the Blind/Low Vision at USDB. This position is located in Salt Lake City.

Roles and Responsibilities
As a Paraprofessional you will:

  • Prepare teaching materials and tutor individual students under the supervision of the instructor
  • Communicate the progress of the students to the instructor
  • Perform such duties as may relate to the motivation and achievement of students in academic and skills areas
  • Assist with behavior interventions under the direction of the instructor
  • Assist with routine daily activities, i.e. bus duty, recess, lunch, bathroom (may include diapering), etc.
  • Provides support in a classroom environment by working directly with teachers and students.
  • Maintains accurate records and logs.
  • Designs and/or prepares training/instructional materials, teaching aids and devices.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
The ideal candidate for this position will possess:

  • Practical knowledge of basic classroom techniques and organization
  • Techniques for assisting and providing effective support to classroom teachers
  • Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions
  • Enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form;
  • Excited about working with students with disabilities.
  • Positive in their dealings with teachers and other staff.
  • Good listeners who follow directions well.
  • Respected and trusted by students and parents.
  • Willing to be flexible in work tasks and assignments.

Supplemental Information

  • There are risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. being subject to possible physical attack. Risks are related to the possibility of working with students who are non-compliant, self-abusive, and/or aggressive.
  • This position has strenuous physical requirements such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities and recurring lifting of students with limited mobility and/or their personal needs equipment. Must be able to lift and carry over 50 pounds.
  • This is a part-time position for nine (9) months (181 days) each school year. Work schedule Monday through Friday.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check contingent upon employment.
