Job Description

The Salvation Army's Midtown Service and Treatment Center located at 2900 Washington Avenue in St. Louis is hiring a Paramedic/Emergency Medical Technician. This is a full-time, salaried position with a starting pay up to $65,000.00 a year. The ideal candidate will have a desire to help the local community by providing basic medical assessments and services to people in need. This position will work aboard a Mobile Treatment Unit (a specialized behavioral health van) that travels directly into the community. It will be responsible for initial medical assessment of clients, taking vitals, and treating basic wounds. A major focus of this role is saving lives through outreach.

Mobile Treatment Unit EMT/Paramedic - Essential Functions

  1. Adhere to Safe From Harm guidelines and embody The Salvation Army’s mission and values.
  2. Work aboard a Mobile Treatment Unit to bring healthcare services directly to people in the community.
  3. Check incoming clients quickly on or near the unit to see how sick and/or injured they are.
  4. Take vital signs like blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and oxygen levels.
  5. Evaluate clients experiencing withdrawal or overdose, monitor vitals, and screen for concurrent mental health crisis or chronic medical conditions.
  6. Provide basic wound care like cleaning cuts, putting on bandages, and stopping bleeding.
  7. Spot medical emergencies and call for standard ambulance transport if a patient needs to be taken to a hospital.
  8. Distribute Narcan (Naloxone) to clients, family members, and community members.
  9. Train individuals on how to spot an opioid overdose and how to use Narcan safely.
  10. Teach harm reduction strategies to help people stay safer, prevent infections, and reduce health risks.
  11. Administer approved medications for opioid use disorder, overdose reversal treatments (e.g. Naloxone) and coordinate point-of-care testing.
  12. Educate clients, families, and other concerned regarding medication compliance.
  13. Safely de-escalate behavioral health emergencies.
  14. Provide non-judgmental support to build trust with people who use substances.
  15. Maintain accurate, confidential electronic records (EHR & CIMOR) in compliance with HIPPA guidelines.
  16. Conduct follow-up phone calls or face-to-face visits after medication is started to check efficacy. and to affirm follow-up appointments and transportation, if required to the pharmacy or other required services.
  17. Provide care coordination serving as a bridge between the client and the other MSTC sites and other local resources. Facilitate referrals to the hospital, residential treatment, outpatient treatment services, and other case management support.
  18. Works as a team to ensure clean patient compartment in the mobile unit and clean patient care equipment.
  19. Work as a team to conduct outreach and encourage engagement in services to street outreach, shelters, and marginalized populations.
  20. Conduct daily vehicle inspections, clean and sanitize ambulance compartments, and maintain inventory of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals. Disposes of trash and sharps from the mobile unit as needed.
  21. Meet with the Medical Director or designated RN as directed by Executive Director for state compliant supervision and monitoring of services.
  22. Work collaboratively with other agencies to receive and provide referrals for services to assist the clients served.
  23. Attend staff training, meetings, community engagement events, etc. as instructed by the Executive Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent. Certifications: Current state certification/license as an EMT or Paramedic. Valid Basic Life Support (BLS). Licensure: Clean driving record and valid state Driver's License, including E license to transport clients and pass TSA MVR.

Physical and Working Conditions:

Ability to lift, carry, and balance up to 125 pounds (250+ pounds with assistance), and work in varied environmental and potentially hazardous conditions. Adaptability: Comfortable working independently in dynamic, unpredictable outdoor, mobile vehicle and urban environments. Able to work in a high-stress environment, excellent communication, and remain calm and authoritative in crisis situations
