Medtrans Ambulance is seeking experienced Paramedics to serve as Field Training Officer I (Paramedic-FTO I) within the Operations team. The Paramedic-FTO I is responsible for performing the essential functions of a Paramedic while also serving as a mentor, trainer, and evaluator for newly hired Paramedics.
This role ensures that new employees are introduced to Medtrans’ standards of advanced patient care, operational procedures, and compliance requirements. Paramedic-FTO I personnel promote a culture of safety, accountability, and professional excellence by modeling best practices and providing structured training, guidance, and performance feedback in the field.
The Paramedic-FTO I works closely with the Director of Safety & Risk Management and Operations leadership to ensure field training is delivered consistently and aligns with Medtrans operational standards, clinical expectations, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:
Field Training & Mentorship
•Serve as a trainer during field training shifts for newly hired Paramedics.
•Provide direct instruction on ALS clinical skills including advanced assessment, medication administration, airway management, cardiac care, and advanced life support procedures.
•Provide guidance on safe ambulance operations, documentation practices, equipment use, and operational procedures.
•Mentor trainees through structured coaching and professional development during the field training process.
Trainee Evaluation & Documentation
•Evaluate trainee performance daily, identifying strengths, deficiencies, and readiness for independent ALS practice.
•Document trainee progress through Field Training Evaluation Program (FTEP) reports, checklists, and written training evaluations in accordance with company and EMS Agency standards.
•Participate in performance improvement or remedial training plans when necessary.
•Communicate trainee progress and concerns to the Director of Safety & Risk Management as appropriate.
Operational Leadership & Compliance
•Model professional behavior and reinforce Medtrans policies, Standard Operating Procedures, and applicable EMS Agency regulations.
•Support supervisors by reporting performance, safety, or compliance concerns observed during training.
•Foster teamwork, accountability, and patient-centered care across all field operations.
Paramedic Operational Duties
•Perform all Paramedic responsibilities including advanced patient assessment, ALS interventions, medication administration, patient care documentation, and safe transport.
•Operate ambulance vehicles safely in accordance with Medtrans policies and applicable driving regulations.
•Ensure assigned ambulances are properly stocked, clean, and operationally ready at the beginning and end of each shift.
Training Program Participation
•Attend required Paramedic-FTO meetings.
•Participate in additional training sessions assigned by the Director of Safety & Risk Management.
•Support onboarding activities and other training initiatives as requested.

Qualifications
Required Licenses & Certifications
•Valid California Paramedic license
•Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider card issued by the American Heart Association
•Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Provider card issued by the American Heart Association
•Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider card issued by the American Heart Association
•Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT physical), current and valid
•Ambulance Driver’s License (ADL), current and valid
•Valid California driver’s license with a clean driving record
•Ability to obtain and maintain county accreditation in Los Angeles County, Ventura County, and/or Orange County, as required by operational assignment
•Ability to maintain all required licenses, certifications, and continuing education in good standing
Required Experience
•Minimum of six (6) months of employment with Medtrans OR Minimum of six (6) months of prior EMS field experience
•Must demonstrate strong clinical performance, documentation accuracy, and professionalism.
•Must not have received any Written Warning or Final Warning disciplinary actions within the previous six (6) months.
Education
•High school diploma or equivalent required
•Higher education in EMS, healthcare, education, or a related field preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
•Comprehensive knowledge of BLS/ALS protocols, EMS regulations, and ambulance operations.
•Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor, coach, and objectively evaluate trainee performance.
•Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
•Ability to provide constructive feedback and foster professional growth.
•Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities in dynamic environments.
•Demonstrated commitment to safety, compliance, and excellence in patient care.
Technical Skills
•Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
•Experience with ePCR systems, training databases, LMS platforms, or compliance tracking tools preferred
Driving Requirements
•Must be authorized and approved to operate Medtrans company vehicles, including ambulances.
•Must maintain a safe driving record that meets Medtrans insurance and risk management requirements.
•Must comply with all Medtrans vehicle operations and safe driving policies.
