  • Special Victim Unit/Domestic Violence Paralegal responsible for receiving new criminal cases from the counties' 27 state and municipal law enforcement agencies, from court records, and restitution information from victims, and other sources as necessary, for approximately 600 cases annually.

  • The paralegal will be responsible for compiling case files for presentation in Domestic Violence Central Court every two weeks.

  • The paralegal will be responsible for compiling discovery in case files, including but not limited to: criminal complaints, offense reports, photographs, telephone records, medical records, audio records, related PFA court filings, prior criminal record of offender, and financial receipts of damages.

  • The DV paralegal will assist in notifying domestic violence victims and witnesses of any necessary scheduling and rescheduling issues.

  • The DV paralegal may be needed to assist on related cases in PFA-ICC court or during criminal trials.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • The DV paralegal will work closely with the SVU/DA ADAs and DV victim/witness advocates to ensure that cases are ready for presentation of preliminary hearing before DV Central Court.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Compiling DV case files: requesting discovery, as detailed above, from Police Depts, court records, and victims 70%

  • Notifying victims and witnesses of scheduling 15%

  • Attend DV Central Court to assist with court process 15%

OTHER SPECIFIC TASKS OR DUTIES

  • Perform other duties within the SVU as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED; relevant post high education and training is desirable

  • Minimum of two (2) years clerical experience in an office setting

  • Able to use and create documents using Word Perfect 12, Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Able to multi-task and organize work

  • Able to maintain confidentiality

  • Any equivalent training, knowledge, and experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Minimum keyboard requirement: 50 WPM

  • Knowledge of Criminal Justice Systems and its related forms beneficial

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/CLEARANCES

  • Will be subjected to security and background checks.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Responsibilities within your unit require proper attendance and proper notification for taking any time off for vacation, personal and/or making appointments outside the office.

  • This is a major concern during DV Central Court days, where you may be needed to perform duties with very short notice.

  • You must make all attempts to give your supervisor proper notice (minimum of a weeks notice) for any time off that you may require.

  • Last minute requests may be denied.
