Key Responsibilities

The Paralegal provides essential support to attorneys in the Environment Section of the Environment, Health & Human Services Division. This section delivers legal representation for the Department of Environmental Quality, working to ensure regulatory compliance and effective service delivery. The Paralegal plays a vital role in supporting legal operations, maintaining records, and assisting with tracking, coordination, and case preparation. Additionally, the Paralegal is responsible for a wide range of duties that contribute to the smooth operation of the legal team and the fulfillment of department objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide essential legal support to attorneys within the Environment Section, assisting with legal operations, record management, tracking, coordination, and case preparation.
  • Conduct legal research, investigate laws and precedents, and review relevant data and documents to support case strategies.
  • Draft legal documents such as contracts, motions, pleadings, correspondence, and reports; prepare exhibit packages and summarize statements for use in legal proceedings.
  • Proofread and check citations to ensure the accuracy and integrity of legal filings.
  • Assist with case planning, development, and organization, including maintaining files, tracking deadlines, and recording billable hours when required.
  • Conduct factual research, manage case files, gather evidence, and organize information to facilitate case development and presentation.
  • Monitor, organize, and update administrative case dockets to ensure accuracy and compliance with department standards.
  • Manage e-discovery and public record request projects, from preservation through production; utilize software tools for searches, data analysis, and organization, and understand rules related to e-discovery.
  • Supervise or assist other legal support staff as needed to ensure efficient operations.
  • Write and draft correspondence, reports, and other written materials required for internal and external communication.
  • Analyze, summarize, and review data, report findings, interpret results, and make recommendations for action or improvement.
  • Search, retrieve, and research public and private records in accordance with state and federal laws to support legal processes.
  • Determine needs for litigation holds and handle complex government records requests, ensuring compliance and thorough documentation.

The Paralegal is a valuable member of the legal team,
ensuring legal compliance and assisting in the delivery of important services
to communities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in paralegal studies, Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or certification from NALA, NFPA, or NALS.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience navigating federal and local e-filing platforms.
  • Understanding of ABA guidelines as applicable.
  • Proficiency with Westlaw (including AI tools) and Everlaw preferred, but not required.

Required Skills

  • Advanced paralegal skills and independent decision-making abilities.
  • Effective case management and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with e-discovery and use of relevant software tools.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
