Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary
The News Editor is responsible for overseeing the news section, managing reporters, editing articles, writing regular news stories, being on call for breaking news, and ensuring timely publication of news content. This position will be for the Fall Semester only, with opportunities to continue in another position for the Spring Semester.

Responsibilities
Plan and Assign News Coverage:
  • Develop and implement a news coverage plan.
  • Assign news stories to reporters.
  • Monitor news trends and identify important stories relevant to the campus community.
  • Attend key events and press conferences to gather news and information.
  • Conduct interviews and research to provide in-depth and accurate reporting.

Editorial Oversight:
  • Edit news articles for accuracy, clarity, style, and grammar.
  • Fact-check information.
  • Provide constructive feedback to reporters.

News Reporting:
  • Help gather news by attending events, conducting interviews, and researching topics.
  • Attend weekly staff and editorial board meetings.
  • Write and report on news stories as needed, contributing to the news section’s content.
    • 1 story per week unless otherwise communicated
  • Organize coverage of breaking news, investigative stories, and other special reports.
  • Ensure coverage of all Chapman student communities on a regular basis.

Required Qualifications
  • Background in journalism.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and uphold ethical reporting standards.

Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience with The Panther or a comparable publication.
  • Familiarity with AP Style.

Special Instructions to Applicants
