Job Description

The Department of Medicine, Division of General, Geriatric, and Palliative Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a board-certified or board-eligible palliative medicine physician to join its Section of Palliative Medicine.

This is a full-time faculty position available at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor on a tenure-eligible or tenure-ineligible track. Rank, track, and compensation will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications, experience, scholarly accomplishments, and academic interests.

For an exceptionally qualified senior candidate with a distinguished record of clinical excellence, scholarship, leadership, and national or international recognition, appointment to an endowed chair may be considered, subject to University review and approval.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary palliative care program dedicated to improving quality of life for adults living with serious illness. The faculty member will provide compassionate, evidence-based care emphasizing complex symptom management, communication, advance care planning, and support for patients and families.

Clinical responsibilities will include both outpatient palliative medicine practice and inpatient consultation across UVA Health. The distribution of inpatient and outpatient clinical effort will be determined based on the successful candidate's expertise, programmatic needs, and the evolving needs of the patients and communities served by UVA Health.

This is a primarily clinical position. Protected effort may be considered for candidates with active externally funded research programs or demonstrated accomplishments and substantive leadership responsibilities in medical education. The final allocation of clinical, research, educational, and administrative effort will be based on the candidate's qualifications, documented productivity, active funding, programmatic priorities, and available resources.

The successful candidate will also have opportunities to:

  • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and other health professions learners.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary education and faculty development.
  • Contribute to clinical program development, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Develop collaborative clinical, educational, or research initiatives across the Department of Medicine, UVA School of Medicine, and UVA Health.
  • Participate in scholarly work as appropriate to the candidate’s faculty track, rank, and professional interests.
  • Help shape the continued clinical and academic growth of palliative care services across UVA Health.

The Section of Palliative Medicine is a growing, interdisciplinary team dedicated to high-quality serious illness care across UVA Health. The combined inpatient and outpatient teams include approximately 15 physicians and nurse practitioners, 6 nurses, an LCSW, and additional collaborating professionals who support care across settings. We provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, with:

  • A longstanding outpatient palliative care clinic, embedded in the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and operating five days per week.
  • A robust inpatient consult service supporting patients across UVA Health.
  • An ACGME-accredited palliative medicine fellowship, offering opportunities for teaching, mentorship, and curriculum development.
  • Close collaboration with UVA’s NCI-designated Cancer Center, enabling integrated oncology–palliative care models, shared care pathways, and joint program development.

Faculty benefit from a supportive academic environment, strong interdisciplinary partnerships, and opportunities to participate in clinical innovation, education, and scholarship aligned with UVA Health’s mission and ASPIRE values.

The Division of General, Geriatric, and Palliative Medicine is committed to excellence in patient care, education, scholarship, collaboration, and service. Faculty members benefit from the resources of a comprehensive academic health system and opportunities to collaborate with colleagues across clinical departments, research programs, professional schools, and community-based organizations.
