CED is well situated in Downers Grove, Illinois - we are located a commuter train ride West of Chicago and a short drive from farmland.

CED's current salary range for this role is $20.00 to $26.50 / hour. At CED, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions may vary based upon, but not limited to education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift, location and geography. In addition to base salary, the total compensation package may also include participation in a bonus, commission or incentive program. The Painter/Mechanical Assembler is responsible for performing production spray operations involving the application of liquid coatings to manufactured products requiring standard finishes. This role ensures consistent, high-quality results through proper surface preparation, accurate equipment use, and adherence to established specifications and safety procedures.


Requirements

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare surfaces for painting including grit blasting
  • Following established instructions, measures film/paint thickness
  • Masks areas to be protected from paint, including holes or threads
  • Mixes paint products and primers following standard work instructions
  • Applies paint or primer using HVLP spray guns and airbrushes, as well as marking and striping by hand Inspects completed work and corrects defects
  • Following operations and HSE procedures, cleans and maintains spray booths, guns, nozzles and paint booth filters after use; ensure correct separation of waste materials
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment in line with company housekeeping and HSE policies
  • Performs mechanical assembly tasks as required

  • Comply with government and corporate laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Ensure 100% compliance with the Chemring Operational Framework, BACM, Code of Conduct and U.S. Code of Ethics and Business Conduct
  • Special projects and other duties / responsibilities as assigned

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY:

EDUCATION:

High School diploma or equivalent

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 1 year experience in manufacturing or industrial environment; experience with automotive or industrial painting is strongly preferred

SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Lawful US person (ITAR restrictions)
  • Must be eligible to possess explosive under the Safe Explosives Act of 2003 (as amended) as required by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) for all employees of Chemring Energetic Devices
  • Able to work carefully on small, detailed painted parts that require steady hands and accurate placement
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Familiarity with different coatings, thinners, and curing methods
  • Knowledge of PPE requirements
  • Ability to recognize, segregate and handle hazardous and non-hazardous waste in compliance with CED’s HSE procedures, and in accordance with regulatory rules
  • Ability to read technical drawings and chemical hazard (SDS) labels
  • Support the coordination of painting tasks while maintaining quality and meeting expected timelines

PHYSICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Able to sit or stand throughout the shift. Capable of lifting to 35 lbs. without mechanical assistance occasionally, and greater than 35 lbs. with mechanical assistance. Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and explosives, with appropriate risk mitigation.

1. History / Background

Chemring Energetic Devices (CED), located in Downers Grove, Illinois, has been manufacturing mission critical ordnance, pyro-mechanical components and electronics for the defense and aerospace industry since the 1950s.

2. Business Segments

CED’s business is divided into four market segments:

Aircraft Pyro Segment

This segment has historically been the mainstay of CED’s business. CED is the leading supplier of CAD/PAD devices (Cartridge Activated/Propellant Actuated) for the life-support and emergency egress needs of US military pilots. CED enjoys an excellent reputation for the quality of its products. CED’s top customers are USAF and US Navy on ejection seat legacy aircraft platforms.

Missiles Segment

CED has long been a top pyro-mechanisms supplier to some of the major US Missile platforms. CED manufactures devices for JASSM, THAAD, and Tomahawk etc. These devices are primarily pyro-mechanical devices for the missile’s propulsion and flight maneuvering applications.

Space Segment

This segment is centered on CED’s sole-sourced position on Initiators. Our NASA heritage provides truly “space-grade” quality and reliability, not only to the initiators but to all pyro-mechanical devices that are driven by those initiators. CED’s customers are the launch vehicle and satellite primes and tier-1 systems providers.

Electronics Segment

With their JCAST and SCOT tester line of products, CED is the sole source provider of portable test equipment used by USAF pilots to check out their life support and communications gear prior to flight.

CED is recognized as the leading technical expert in energetics engineering. CED develops its ordnance and pyrotechnic devices by applying physics-based analysis and modelling.
