Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing entry level semi-skilled work painting facilities and refinishing furniture. Exercises no supervision.

Work Location

Various city facilities, with assignments being based on departmental needs.

Work Hours

7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Examples of duties

  • Cleans surfaces to be painted by using sandpaper, burners, scrapers, brushes, sanding machines, and dusters.
  • Assists in painting interior and exterior walls and other equipment by operating all equipment used in the paint trade.
  • Assists in installing floor and wall coverings made of various materials which may weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • Assists in installing ceiling tiles.
  • Assists in finishing furniture.
  • Assists in erecting and dismantling scaffolds, which may entail movements of stooping, climbing, standing, reaching, and crouching.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License or the ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor convictions, an Open Arrest for any criminal offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and family violence convictions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Use of your own personal vehicle may at times be required, and proof of Liability Insurance will be required.
  • Ability to identify paint defects and failures and provide corrective action.
  • Knowledge of Master Painters Institute (MPI) standards and how to use the standards. Using these standards to perform coating operations.
  • Knowledge of the Society for Protective Coatings (previous name Steel Structures Painting Council (SSPC)) standards and how to use the standards. Using these standards to perform coating operations
  • Knowledge of lead abatement coating and painting of these surfaces.
  • Knowledge of environmental, safety, and health requirements and standards.

Applicant Information

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Working conditions are both indoor and outdoor with exposure to temperature extremes, unfavorable fumes and odors, and hazardous chemicals.
