Job Description

The Custom Dunnage & Rack Packaging Engineer is responsible for supporting the ordering, build, delivery, and quality of all specialty “make” and “buy” packaging—including custom racks, engineered dunnage, and unique protective packaging—for assigned programs.

The engineer helps ensure packaging solutions meet program timing, support part protection needs, and achieve the lowest Total Packaging Cost (TPC) for the company.

A core responsibility of this role is ensuring the design team completes their work on time so fabrication and build activities can start early enough to meet X3, pre‑batch, batch, and launch milestones.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Timing & Design Coordination

The Packaging Engineer is responsible for:

  • Tracking and monitoring all custom rack and dunnage design activities
  • Ensuring the design team completes design work on schedule to allow timely ordering, fabrication, build, and delivery
  • Communicating design timing risks and driving cross‑functional actions when needed
  • Supporting program launch teams by ensuring each packaging milestone is met

Build & Supplier Support:

  • Assisting suppliers during prototype and production builds of custom racks and dunnage
  • Tracking build progress and helping resolve timing or quality issues at fabrication sites
  • Supporting part fit‑ups, rack quality checks, and functional validations
  • Preparing technical documentation for load patterns, handling guidance, and verification activities

Cross‑Functional Collaboration:

  • Working with ILE, VPE, Quality, Purchasing, Supply Chain, Product Engineering, Manufacturing, and Logistics to verify requirements
  • Supporting plant teams during prototype approvals and production readiness reviews
  • Coordinating required data and inputs for program milestones

Part Protection & Validation Support:

  • Ensuring part protection requirements are met through proper execution of design, build, and validation steps
  • Supporting ergonomic and handling assessments with plant and launch teams
  • Helping verify durability and functional performance of the final packaging

Continuous Improvement:

  • Supporting improvement initiatives focused on rack fabrication quality, packaging durability, and TPC reduction
  • Participating in efforts to enhance build processes, templates, and supplier performance
  • Assisting with tracking and documenting packaging improvement savings

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging, Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in material handling, rack fabrication, rack design oversight, or packaging engineering
  • Ability to assist in resolving complex packaging issues and design/build timing conflicts
  • Experience supporting or coordinating specialized packaging builds
  • Excellent communication skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in a related field
  • Minium of 5 years of operational experience in material handling, logistics, or supply chain
  • Knowledge of Stellantis Industrial System (Logistics Pillar)
  • Familiarity with rack design processes and fabrication supply base
  • Experience in Material Flow or Plant Material Handling environments
