Packaging Developer
The Asia-based Sourcing & Development Department serves as the extension of the global teams, managing the end-to-end development process while upholding the highest standards of performance, quality, integrity, and delivery that customers and riders expect.
The Packaging Developer plays a pivotal role in ensuring that packaging specifications, colors, and test results meet the expectations of product managers and market leaders, and are approved in time for production. This role requires close collaboration with Project Managers and cross-functional stakeholders to maintain development tracking tools, deliver weekly status reports, and provide accurate project updates to support effective delivery control.
In addition to technical expertise, strong vendor relationship management and communication skills are essential to drive supplier performance. The Packaging Developer is expected to lead in diagnosing issues, developing solutions, and defining corrective action plans whenever packaging challenges arise that could impact production.
Role Responsibilities
Packaging Development
- Independently design packaging structures for bikes, framesets, and equipment, ensuring solutions comply with relevant packaging regulations and meet testing standards, transportation requirements, and market expectations.
- Collaborate with SBC and manufacturers to develop innovative and sustainable packaging solutions, including new materials, finishes, and best practices that protect products across diverse shipping environments, while aligning with the overall design direction.
Data Management
- Manage comprehensive packaging information, including drawing, pricing, test results, color matching, and detailed packaging BOM and descriptions.
- Collaborate with Project Managers and cross-functional stakeholders to maintain development project status and timelines within bi-weekly tracker and Agile, ensuring accurate tracking and visibility.
Quality and Compliance
- Communicate field issues and collaborate with Quality and Engineering teams to expedite responses and implement effective solutions.
- Partner with SQE to diagnose production issues and hold vendors accountable for corrective actions.
- Work closely with suppliers to uphold SBC policies and ensure vendor alignment with SBC’s overall strategy.
- Collaborate with Compliance teams to ensure all packaging designs are properly tested and meet regulatory requirements.
Supplier Partnership
- Identify and evaluate new sourcing options and emerging technologies, introducing them to the sourcing team for future business consideration.
- Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with suppliers through close collaboration and consistent engagement.
- Partner with suppliers to improve packaging sustainability, performance, quality, testing, and delivery, while driving innovation in both product and manufacturing processes to bring new, efficient, and sustainable packaging solutions to market.
Travel
- Travel to supplier factories as needed to conduct packaging trials, assembly checks, and testing. Regions include, but are not limited to, Vietnam, Taiwan, and China.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong communication skills in both English and Mandarin/Taiwanese, with proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Solid knowledge of packaging materials and production processes.
- Proficiency in packaging CAD programs for structural design.
- Working knowledge of Adobe Design Suite for graphic and visual applications.
- Familiarity with Microsoft systems (Outlook, Excel, etc.).
- Experience collaborating across international cultures and diverse teams.
- Understanding of intellectual property ownership principles and confidentiality requirements.
- Strong problem-solving abilities with a focus on root cause analysis.
- Knowledge of Oracle Agile system is a plus.
