About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Packaging Design Engineer to join HP’s Print Packaging Design team. In this role, you will design and
develop packaging solutions for HP printer products—including cartons, rigid boxes, and molded pulp cushions. You will work across multiple
functions and gain hands-on experience throughout the supply chain while applying packaging design fundamentals to improve product
protection, cost, and sustainability.
Responsibilities
Design packaging solutions for HP printers using established engineering principles, specifications, and requirements.
Develop packaging structures such as cartons, rigid boxes, molded pulp, and cushioning systems.
Contribute to mechanical and thermal hardware solutions, including electronics enclosures and production tooling.
Execute established test plans for new and existing designs, including tolerance validation, form/fit/function, shock and vibration, EMI, safety, and reliability.
Build effective working relationships with internal teams as well as outsourced development and manufacturing partners.
Participate as a member of a cross-functional project team to deliver reliable, cost-effective, high-quality packaging solutions for complex products.
Demonstrate solid understanding of core engineering concepts and apply them to packaging development challenges.
Communicate design status, project progress, risks, and issue resolution with management and partners.
Manage relationships with outsourced suppliers, ensuring alignment on deliverables, schedules, quality, and cost expectations.
Lead project teams of mechanical hardware and packaging engineers for moderately complex development programs.
Drive process efficiencies and deliver packaging that meet business requirements through strong documentation and project management.
Apply technical judgment to solve problems in straightforward situations using prior experience and available precedents.
Represent the packaging/mechanical team throughout all phases of larger or more complex development projects.
Provide guidance, coaching, and mentoring to less experienced team members.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline; or equivalent technical experience.
Typically, 4–7 years of experience in engineering design, hardware development, packaging design, or related fields; or an advanced degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
Technical Skills
Experience designing cartons, rigid boxes, and molded pulp packaging structures.
Proficiency with 3D CAD tools used in mechanical or packaging design.
Understanding of design for manufacturability, packaging processes, and production tooling.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify process gaps and propose practical solutions.
Professional Skills
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and SharePoint.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams suppliers, and outsourced partners.
Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing to collaborative team efforts.
