Job Description

The Packaging Machine Operator is responsible for efficiently operating, adjusting, and maintaining various packaging equipment used in the packaging process for carpet metals and weatherstripping products. This position requires technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive safety checks before operating equipment, ensuring all guards are properly positioned and safety equipment is accessible
  • Follow and communicate written and verbal directions regarding production operations and assignments to team members
  • Operate packaging equipment to ensure proper packaging of finished product, including:
  • Loading and threading shrink film through guides and rollers
  • Maintaining appropriate tension and feed rates
  • Controlling and adjusting heat settings on sealing elements
  • Setting electric eye controls according to various product lengths
  • Operating automatic labeling machines with precision, including:
  • Loading labels into the machine
  • Adjusting label holders to accommodate different label types
  • Configuring guides for various product specifications
  • Set up the production line at the end of the shift to ensure a smooth transition for the next shift
  • Respond to equipment issues quickly to minimize downtime
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area by regularly emptying film scrap and trash receptacles, cleaning labeling equipment, rollers, and other components, ensuring sufficient shrink film is available for the next shift, cleaning the shrink tunnel, and sweeping floor areas.
  • Document daily production metrics, downtime incidents, and scrap records
  • Record all operational issues and solutions in the equipment log book
  • Develop comprehensive knowledge of various product types and packaging processes
  • Provide support in other production areas of equal or lesser complexity when needed
  • Maintain professional interactions with all colleagues and supervisors

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous experience in manufacturing or packaging operations a plus
  • Basic mathematical skills to perform production calculations and setups
  • Fundamental writing abilities for completing daily production documentation
  • Clear verbal communication skills for effective team coordination
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills for machine operation
  • Ability to operate equipment requiring simultaneous use of both hands
  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting capabilities
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality and safety
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand continuously for up to 10 hours per shift
  • Capable of lifting, carrying, or pushing materials weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Manual dexterity to operate machinery controls and make adjustments
  • Visual acuity to inspect product quality and machine performance

Work Environment

  • Manufacturing plant setting with varying noise levels requiring hearing protection
  • Non-air-conditioned facility
  • Concrete flooring throughout work areas
  • Verbal communication may occasionally be challenging due to noise levels
  • Personal protective equipment is required, including hearing protection, safety glasses, and safety shoes.

Schedule

  • Second Shift: Monday - Thursday, 4:30 p.m. – 2:30 a.m., with occasional
  • overtime and weekend requirements based on business needs
