POSITION: Occupational Therapist

Upshur County Schools

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Special Education

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

EMPLOYMENT TERM: 215 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18-5-45;

SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with

Upshur County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by Director of Special Education in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and UCBOE Policy 5010

Occupational therapists treat injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. They help these patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living, learning, and working.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Adhere to professional, ethical, and legal standards of practice and to the established regulations and laws governing Exceptional Children Programs.
• Participate in activities that assist with professional development and use clinical research information to enhance occupational therapy services.
• Assessment: Screen and evaluate students with physical and/or psychosocial disabilities in the use of gross and fine motor functions, independent living skills, and sensory and perceptual-motor skills.
• Intervention/Service Delivery: Implement direct and indirect services based on interventions determined by evaluation results.
• Consultation/Education: Provide information and consultation services to administrators, school personnel, parents, and community agencies to develop and maintain support of students with physical and/or psychosocial disabilities in the educational environment and the objective of the occupational therapy service.
• Communication: Promote effective verbal and written communication with administrators, school personnel, parents, and community agencies.
• Program Management: Establish the necessary schedules, procedures, resources, and records to manage the occupational therapy program and work cooperatively to accomplish the goals of Upshur County Schools.
• Follow all procedures related to Medicaid and maintain appropriate documentation.
• Perform other duties and/task as assigned by the Director of Special Education or the Superintendent.

Special Education Teacher:

• Diagnose and assess student needs in accordance with county and state special education procedures and with instructional goals and objectives; conduct progress monitoring and benchmark assessments as required; utilizes data in developing and modifying instruction to meet the needs of students.
• Utilize teaching techniques and classroom strategies to accommodate the exceptionality and various learning styles and modes of his/her students.
• Perform assignments related to record keeping, reporting, documentation of parent and agency contacts, IEP development and updates and special education reports.
• Promote a positive home/school relationship with parents through regular IEP, parent/teacher conferences, regular progress reports and parent training.
• Assist in the selection of programs, equipment and materials to meet the needs of his/her students and in accordance with the approved IEP's.
• Utilize furniture, equipment and facilities in the most effective manner to support the instructional program.
• Interact with students to promote a positive school image to enhance the teaching-learning process.
• Promote positive community relations through effective communication and involvement of community members.
• Work with the director and central office staff in identifying and solving problems related to his/her students;
• Perform other duties and functions as assigned bythe director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid certificate/licensing as an Occupational Therapist pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-2; National Board Certification in Occupational Therapy; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate; Meet the qualifications outlined in WV Code §18A-3-2a; Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-A) issued by the American Speech Language-Hearing Association.
