The Overhead Crane Trainer develops competent operators through classroom instruction, hands-on training, field observation, and performance evaluation. The position initially focuses on overhead crane operations and will expand over time to support forklifts, aerial lifts, and other mobile equipment used throughout the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver initial, refresher, remedial, and requalification training for overhead crane operators.
  • Provide classroom instruction, hands-on demonstrations, and practical operator evaluations.
  • Determine whether employees can safely and effectively operate assigned equipment before qualification.
  • Conduct routine plant walkdowns and observe equipment in use to verify operators are following established procedures and safe operating practices.
  • Identify operating gaps, equipment-related hazards, and training opportunities; provide coaching and follow-up as needed.
  • Help maintain accurate training, evaluation, and operator qualification records.
  • Develop and update training materials, qualification standards, and evaluation forms.
  • Work with Operations, Maintenance, and Safety to address training needs and improve equipment performance.
  • Support the future development and delivery of training for forklifts, aerial lifts, and other mobile equipment.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes in an industrial environment.
  • Strong knowledge of crane safety, inspections, and load-handling practices.
  • Ability to train, coach, and evaluate employees.
  • Strong communication, organization, and basic computer skills

Preferred:

  • Previous experience as a trainer, lead operator, supervisor, or mentor.
  • Experience in steel manufacturing or heavy industrial operations.
  • Experience with forklifts, aerial lifts, or other mobile equipment.
  • Train-the-trainer certification or similar instructional experience.
