Phlebotomy Technicians serve a more vital role than ever before in the care of patients, thanks to increasing demands to provide patient samples for diagnostic testing.The caregiver in this role will primarily travel to nursing homes to draw at those sites as well asfloat to inpatient phlebotomy, as neededTravelling to patientsallows more prompt care with less inconvenience to the patients because theydon’thave to travel to a draw site. This is afulfillingrole that will allow you to have a direct impact on positive patient experiences each day.
A caregiver in this position worksfull-time| varying shifts| 4:00am—4:30pm or 12:30am—1:00pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform blood collection for extended care clients and provide service to theirresidents, (primarily geriatric).
Perform specimen processing and send-out tasks, such asaccessioningand packaging for transport.
Follow proper protocol when collecting samples, such as introducing yourself, verifying patient identity, collecting specimens for all tests listed on the requisition, clarifying tests, labeling specimens,transportingand centrifuging.
Provide STAT,scheduledand routine orders.
Ensure all current demographic and insurance information is obtained and verified.
Checkappropriate paperworkfor each test,patientand/or client.
Complete andsubmitappropriate administrativepaperwork, such as time and mileage reports.
Follow proper laboratory safety procedures.
Be flexible toworka varied schedule asrequired, including early morning and afternoon shifts and travel to patient locations.
Carry an on-call pager on assigned weekdays and every other weekend during the hours of 4AM – midnight, answer the pager within 15-30 minutes, arrive at the home within an hour, collect statdrawsand have the specimen back to the lab within 2 hours from the time receipt of call.
Adhere to HIPAA guidelines.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
HighSchoolDiploma or GED
One year of current phlebotomy experience
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Crossuponhire or within three months of hire
Current, valid Driver License isrequiredas well as personal auto liability insurance coverage with the limits of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident on bodily injury, and $100,000 in property liability damagerequired
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduation certificate from a formal accredited phlebotomy program
ASCP phlebotomy certification
Two years of current phlebotomy experience
Previousphlebotomy experience in a nursing home setting
