About Heart Math Tutoring
Our nation and children are missing out on significant potential when just 36% of fourth graders in the U.S. meet grade level expectations in math (2024 NAEP). Tutoring has been proven to have significant, positive effects on student outcomes, but few programs exist focused on elementary math. Heart Math Tutoring ("HMT" or "Heart") is a nonprofit based in Charlotte, NC with a mission of ensuring all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success. Heart gives young students successful experiences in math through 1:1 tutoring during the school day, delivered by supervised volunteers. Since 2013, Heart has grown to support 1,500+ students across 33 schools in Charlotte, NC, Charleston, SC, and Winston-Salem, NC, while maintaining high-quality student outcomes. About the Role
Do you believe all children can be successful in math and school with the right supports? So do we! When you join Heart Math Tutoring, you'll be part of unlocking the powerful resource of volunteer time to make a positive, immediate difference for students, schools, and everyone involved. Heart is launching in Cabarrus County in the 2026–27 school year, beginning with one school and approximately 50 students. This is a ground-floor opportunity to help build something meaningful in your community. The Outreach & Program Coordinator is a dual-function role. During the school year, roughly half of your time is spent on-site at your assigned school, directly supporting students and volunteers as a Program Coordinator. The other half is focused on outreach — building the community relationships and volunteer pipeline that make Heart's work possible. This role is based in Cabarrus County with travel to Heart’s Charlotte office for program training and periodic staff meetings.
Job Responsibilities
Program Coordinator – ~50% of time, Aug - May
The coordinator will be present at their assigned school during tutoring sessions where they assess students and monitor instruction, in addition to providing ongoing training and real-time coaching to tutors. The coordinator is also Heart’s liaison to the school, streamlining communication to teachers and hosting the volunteers while they are on campus. Key job responsibilities are listed below.
Outreach Coordinator — ~50% during the program year, estimated 100% of time in summer months
As a brand-new market, Cabarrus County requires intentional community-building alongside volunteer recruitment.
